James Franco, Danny McBride, and Natalie Portman team up this weekend to present us “Your Highness” which is a lewd and crude comedic take on the swords and sorcery genre. Of course most critics are pulverizing the film. Check out what they are saying about it.
“There’s a lowness to ‘Your Highness’ that drags the film down…while star/screenwriter Danny McBride plays a famously lazy character in the film, his taking the same approach to the script makes for a limp movie with only occasional laughs. This film looks like it was a lot more fun to make than it is to watch.” – Tom Long, Detroit News Film Critic
“Too often…the filmmakers try to squeeze humor from obscenities that, while initially amusing when lobbed in a story about knights and wizards, lose their sting with repetition. By and large, ‘Your Highness’ is a Cheech and Chong movie in period drag, so it’s no wonder it goes up in smoke.” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
“Nothing works. Nothing. The way-overqualified cast looks ready to party. But the script just lies there, throwing in dirty words in place of bawdy wit or a scrap of originality.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“‘Your Highness’ has a reckless, half-baked feel, like something hatched by teenagers during a cannabis-clouded slumber party: Obviously, the title came first, followed by lame one-liners and other immature ideas.” – Peter DeBruge, Variety
“‘Your Highness’… falls…into a deep chasm of such comic lowness after less than five minutes that it’s unable to extricate itself. There is little worse in the movie world than a spoof that falls flat on its over-costumed butt, but that’s what you get with ‘ Your Highness .'” – Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter
The studios and producers who collaborated on “Your Highness” need to be thankful that the average moviegoer doesn’t listen to what these top critics have to say. According to what I’ve seen, if you’re a fan of films that are filled with stupid slapstick, toilet humor, and irreverent jokes this film is for you.
“‘Your Highness’ could have so easily become just another spoof along the lines of ‘Epic Movie’ or ‘Meet the Spartans’ but surprisingly just as the action was treated seriously in ‘Pineapple Express,’ the fantasy elements here are just as important as the comedy. The special effects and production design are very impressive and the film certainly looks epic using the country of Ireland as its backdrop.” – Chris Holt
“If you think these cinematic triumphs could be combined into something awesome a) you are correct, and b) you should go check this movie out. The script was inventive, witty, and vulgar; beyond what Kevin Smith would do. Truly brilliant writing and acting. I had high expectations, and ‘Your Highness’ delivered.” – Nate Ralston
“This is a future classic comedy film along the lines of Monty Python, ‘Princess Bride’ or ‘Evil Dead 3.’ This is just to say I found comedic connections to these classic comedies…Superbly funny movie! – Marcus Kavanagh
“Bawdy, foul-mouthed and tremendous fun. This fairy tale is definitely not for children. There are constant sexual references…and…endless cursing. And it’s all absolutely necessary to the plot which raises the standard fantasy to a new level of raucous hysteria.” – Bonnie Steiger
“GO see this movie. See it twice, bring your mother. Solid genre flick, doesn’t really get much better than this. As a medieval ‘farce’ is concerned, ‘Your Highness’ is way smarter than anyone is giving it credit.” – Bobby Hacker
