Yak and Yeti is an Indian and Nepalese restaurant that is located in the city of Arvada, just north of the old downtown. What’s sets this restaurant apart from other Indian restaurants isn’t just the cuisine but that you can also have a pint of beer, that is quite a unique concept.
What makes the Yak and Yeti unique isn’t that they offer beer because most Indian restaurant offer bottled Indian brewed beer like Maharaja Premium Lager and Kingfisher Lager, but this restaurant has a brewery on the premises. Colorado is known for it’s microbreweries, brewpubs, and now an independent restaurant that brews their own beer.
Yak and Yeti main restaurant is in a large old house that used to be the location of the old Cheshire Cat Pub and Brewery. Since the building had all the brewery equipment on the premises, Dol Bhattaraj the owner of Yak and Yeti thought it would be a great idea to keep the tap house. Dol Bhattaraj is a native of eastern Nepal and has worked in the restaurant business for over thirteen year. The waiter, Gesab gave us information while pouring tasters of their beer and said that the idea of Indian food paired with beer was a perfect combination. Bhattaraj hired Chris Kennedy as head brewer and have recently won a gold medal in the strong pale ale category at the 2010 Great American Brew Fest with their Himalayan IPA.
The Yak and Yeti has a warm and inviting atmosphere of a private home with their wooden bar being the first thing you notice upon entering the foyer of the restaurant. It seats around 6 – 8 customers but on a nice day, many sit out in the patio with a pint of beer. There are at least five draft beers on tap at the Yak and Yeti. The draft beers that we tasted were the Chai Stout, Mild Porter, ESB, Pilsner, and award wining IPA to Oatmeal stout. All were excellent in flavor.
Through the bar is the entrance to the buffet where they have a large selection for lunch with soups, salads, and delicious Indian cuisine. The lunch buffet has many different kinds of Indian dishes from vegetarian such as Alu Matar which is a curried potato and peas, Saag Paneer is cooked spinach in homemade cheese and cream to a creamy and rich flavored Chicken Tikka Masala and their Tandoori chicken. They have two kinds of basmati rice, yellow rice and a white one. There are also a variety of desserts at the buffet like rice pudding, mango custard, Gulab Jammun that is a cream of milk balls in light syrup, and sweet carrot pudding.
You can have a hot cup of Chai with lunch or a pint of draft beer. All around it was satisfying lunch.
Buffet is daily from 11am – 3pm, ordering from the menu is daily from 3pm – 9pm, dinner buffet only on Friday and Saturday from 5pm – 9pm.
Parking is available at the restaurant. Yak and Yeti have another location in Westminster and you can get a pint of beer there also. The Arvada location brews the beer and sends kegs to the Westminster restaurant.
