When someone asks the question, ‘What is your favorite video game system of all time?’ one immediately thinks back to the old classic consoles, the NES, Sega Genesis, or Atari. Many would say that it is heresy to not choose one of these consoles as the favorite. But to choose one of these as a favorite is to play on nostalgia, not reality. The reality is that these are old systems that don’t hold up well with the current generation of gamers.
To be the best or favorite, the system in question needs to provide a great value to the gamer. Consoles today provide more than just a gaming experience, they provide an entertainment experience, which is why my favorite all time video game console is the Xbox 360.
I know that die hard old school gamers are crying for my head right now, but that’s OK, because they are wrong. They are blinded by nostalgia, which can only carry a system so far. Each of the older systems has it’s merits, but when I’m not able to plug it into my HDTV without a ton of adaptors and there is no Netflix or music streaming from my entertainment system, it cannot be my favorite.
I also can’t choose an older system because that would be too obvious and cliche. The natural choice would be the original Nintendo, but what value does the old system provide now besides collecting dust on a bookcase or melting away in an attic.
The primary reason that I have chosen the Xbox 360 as my all time favorite is the value afforded to me on a daily basis. I am constantly using my Xbox, I can connect with friends, watch movies, listen to music, as well as play most of the popular game titles.
As I’ve grown older I have also gained a greater understanding of the importance of gaming on society. 20 years ago game consoles where toys for children, today they are the center of a family’s entertainment biosphere. All of my fiends have a game system in their house, even my parents, who don’t text, have a Wii.
If I begin to Jones for the old school games, I can download copies from the Xbox marketplace or by a disc loaded with the classics at Best Buy. But once I’ve played these dated games for a few hours, I’m screaming for better graphics and richer content.
The Xbox 360 also provides the best platform for online gaming. The community is rich and full of diverse content to satisfy even the most passive gamer. I can play team death match or watch a movie with my friends in a Netflix party. The entertainment possibilities are almost endless with the Xbox 360, which is what makes it my favorite console of all time.
