Why a Stroke is Called a Silent Killer

by mud mosh

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain, or going to the brain becomes blocked. Once the brain is deprived of getting the oxygen it needs to survive, that part of the brain begins to die. The severity of the outcome of a stroke can be minimized if you act immediately and don’t ignore the symptoms.

Strokes are one of the leading silent killers of individuals today. The reason that a stroke is known as a silent killer is that the symptoms are often ignored, rather than being acted on immediately.

Warning signs of a stroke

The warning signs of a stroke can start with a mild numbness in the arms, hands, feet, or any other part of the body. This numbness will almost always affect only one side of the body. Should this occur, get to a doctor immediately or call 911.

Other signs and symptoms of a stroke may not be so obvious, which is another reason strokes are dubbed silent killers. Often times, the signs and symptoms of stroke are completely ignored. Make no mistake; your body is trying to tell you something. These signs and symptoms are warning signs from your body to you. It’s better to ere on the side of caution than to ignore the symptoms and you fall victim to a stroke.

If you suddenly experience blurred vision, confusion, slurred speech, or difficult speaking, these are warning signs that cannot be ignored. Another huge indicator is that you suddenly get a headache. This headache is usually a sudden one at the onset and it is completely different from other headaches that you have had in the past. This headache will cause you to lose your balance or have difficulty with walking and balance.

Types of strokes

There are two types of stroke. There is one known as ischemic and the other one is known as hemorrhagic .

An Ischemic stroke is when a blood clot blocks the blood vessels in the brain. This prevents the blood and oxygen from reaching the brain. As a result of this, the affected area of the brain will begin to die or starve from lack of oxygen, blood and nutrients if not treated immediately.

A Hemorrhagic stroke is one in which an artery in the brain is leaking or bursts. This causes bleeding inside the brain or near the surface of the brain. This type of stroke is the most deadly. This stroke requires immediate assistance to survive.

Conclusion

The warning signs of a stroke can be very mild to extremely severe. These signs and symptoms should not be minimized or ignored. If you feel you could be having stroke symptoms, see your doctor immediately. One of the biggest reasons that people do not survive a stroke is that they fail to recognize the symptoms or signs.
