During pregnancy and the months before you conceive (both men and women) should avoid foods containing the harmful substances that can get passed directly on to your unborn child. While some of the substances are obvious, like alcohol, some of these may surprise you. The following substances should ideally be avoided completely.
1. Raw or lightly cooked Eggs and Poultry
Eggs and Chicken must always be well cooked to prevent infection as Hens may be infected by Salmonella and other Bacteria.
2. Sugary foods
High Sugar Foods such as cakes, cookies and other sweet snacks and drinks should be avoided as they contain very few nutrients.
3. Tea and Coffee
If you want to conceive, it is a good idea to cut out or cut down on caffeine, tea and chocolate.Researchers have found that they can impede iron uptake and have an adverse effect on female fertility.Instead you can drink non-caffeine hot drinks which are available in many kinds today and they form good alternatives to tea and coffee.
Excess salt increases the risk of high blood-pressure which can be harmful, so avoid eating salty snacks like potato chips and crisps and avoid adding extra salt to food.
5. Raw beef
Undercooked Beefburgers and Steaks should be avoided because of the risk of BSE – Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy ( also known as Mad Cow Disease ).
High Vitamin A can damage the fetus and Liver Sausages are very high in Vitamin A. Liver Sausages are a definite no during pregnancy!
7. Unpasteurized Milk
Avoid taking unpasteurized milk as it may harbor highly harmful bacteria including Salmonella and Listeria.
8. Certain Fish
Avoid fish because they contain high amount of mercury, which can harm the developing nervous system in an unborn child. Avoid Shark, Swordfish and Marlin and eat no more than one Tuna steak or two medium cans of Tuna in a week. Also avoid Shellfish and Raw Fish as these carry a higher than-average risk of food poisoning.
9. Fried foods and junk food
These foods should be avoided as they are high in unhealthy fats.This includes Convenience foods and Takeaway meals.These have poor nutrient value.
10.Contaminated Water and Unwashed Veggies/Fruits
Always wash your veggies and fruits before eating them and drink from water purifiers. Unwashed veggies and contaminated water expose you to Toxoplasmosis.
Keep in mind that good health during pregnancy is not only about avoiding harmful foods, you also need to have food with good nutritional value and add some pounds to your weight to help the baby growing inside of you.Eat fresh and natural foods and plenty of fruits!
