For the past couple of years, I have been regularly purchasing and eating a wide variety of Cafe W food products. Cafe W is a line of high quality food products that is distributed by and sold at Walgreen’s Pharmacies everywhere. After seeing the Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza in the freezer case at my local Walgreen’s Pharmacy for several weeks, I recently decided to purchase one of the pies.
This creatively inspired frozen pizza features some positive attributes and some less than glowing components. Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is one food writer’s product review of the Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza.
The net weight of the standard sized Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza is 14.1 ounces (300 grams). According to the product’s nutrition facts label, the pizza contains three 1/3 pizza (133 grams) servings.
In physical size, this is a pretty big pizza. When packaged in its box, it is quite large and requires a decent amount of storage space in ones freezer.
The regular retail price charged for one 14.1 ounce Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza at West Hartford, Connecticut area Walgreen’s Pharmacies is approximately $4.99. When I recently purchased one of these frozen pizza pies, it was on sale for $3 per pie.
This frozen BBQ chicken pizza features a basically pleasant texture. I must admit however, that I generally prefer thicker, pan style pizzas over thin crust varieties.
After purchasing and eating the frozen Walgreen’s Cafe W Pepperoni Pizza, which features a thick crust, I thought it would be nice to try the thin crust BBQ chicken pizza.
The first thing I noticed regarding the texture of this pie was the thinness of the crust. The crust on this pie is very thin and it becomes crispy fairly quickly. I also noticed that the slices of red onion on the pie looked like they were just sliced from a fresh red onion.
The red onion slices provide some zesty and slightly crunchy texture, which contrasts well with the pieces of white meat chicken and two types of cheese. The pieces of chicken on the Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza are pretty small and are not always entirely distinguishable.
Although this frozen pizza contains a good amount of both mozzarella and smoked Gouda cheeses, I couldn’t necessarily differentiate between the two varieties. The sauce which adorns a pizza is usually my favorite part of a pie and I like the BBQ sauce that tops this product, but I think that more of it is needed.
While the various textures on this pizza are basically appealing, I felt that the overall mouth feel offered by the item was somewhat less than satisfying.
Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza contains 260 calories, with 90 calories from fat, per 1/3 pizza (133 grams) serving. This frozen pizza also contains 5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 10 grams total fat, 30 mg of cholesterol, 480 mg of sodium, 29 grams total carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 4 grams of sugars and 14 grams of protein, per 1/3 pizza serving.
Taste / Flavor
When it comes to taste, I have to admit that I was less than satisfied by the flavor of the Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza. Before I even tasted this frozen pizza, I knew it was different from most of the pizza pies I eat.
This pizza seems like a trendy, or designer type of pie to me. It reminds me of the type of pie that would be served at an upscale restaurant. After eating almost the entire pie, I feel that its flavor is basically pretty good, but it could use some improvement.
The BBQ sauce on this pizza tastes really good. The color of the fairly sweet sauce is redder than many BBQ sauces and to me, it looks more like pizza sauce than BBQ sauce. The chicken pieces do not really offer a lot of flavor, but the fresh red onions do provide a jolt of needed taste.
A fair amount of cheese covers the Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza, but I think it could benefit from some more of it. When I ate this pie, I really couldn’t tell if the cheese I was tasting was mozzarella or smoked Gouda. While for the most part, I did enjoy eating this pizza, I think that eating a small amount of it would be more satisfying than eating a large portion. On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this product a rating of 8.50.
The Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza is packaged in a large cardboard box. The black and gray front label features a close-up photo of the enclosed product and the rear label lists all pertinent ingredient and nutritional information, as well as cooking instructions. Inside the box, the pizza is further packaged in a heavy duty plastic wrapper. The box and plastic wrapper are both relatively easy to open.
It is difficult for me to rate the Walgreen’s Cafe W Crispy Thin Crust BBQ Chicken Pizza as either good or bad. Like most other things in life, this frozen pizza contains pluses and minuses. If you’re a fan of thin crust pizzas and/or BBQ chicken pies, there’s a good chance you would enjoy eating this frozen item.
Would I purchase this product again? Yes, if it was to be utilized as an appetizer, or accompaniment to other food items. As far as being a main course, I would definitely prefer to eat a regular pan style pizza pie, with standard type pizza sauce and just mozzarella cheese. Who knows? Maybe you’ll try this pizza and find it to be absolutely wonderful. It’s all a matter of personal preference, or taste.
