For those of us on Team Damon, last night was heart wrenching until the very end, when we finally got the assurance we needed that Damon was not going to die. This was a huge relief after last week’s shocking twist, when Damon was bitten by Tyler Lockwood. Then Damon tried to commit suicide by burning in the sun, and you couldn’t help but feel bad for him. After he witnessed Rose die earlier in the season from a wolf bite, it was sad to see him suffering in the same way. Luckily, Stefan got there in time to save him from himself and have Alaric keep him on suicide watch until a cure was found.
Throughout the episode, we witnessed Damon having hallucinations/flashbacks to his life before becoming a vampire, when he was being seduced by Katherine, mixed with hallucinations of seeing Elena. During one of these hallucinations, he actually bit Elena thinking that she was Katherine. Later, Damon apologized to Elena for all the things he’d done to hurt her, and she forgave him, which was what he needed. Seeing Damon so vulnerable was the sweetest thing, because everyone knows he puts up a strong front all the time, especially with his unrequited love for Elena.
Speaking of their unrequited love, Damon fans finally got the Delena (Damon and Elena) kiss we’ve been waiting for all season. Elena lay in bed with Damon while he lay dying and kissed him, to which he said “thank you”. Too bad it probably won’t mean anything now that Damon is cured. Although, with Stefan away paying the price for that cure, who knows what could happen between Damon and Elena.
Now for the cure. Apparently, Klaus’s blood is the cure for a wolf bite, which Bonnie found out by trying to ask Emily, unsuccessfully, for help. They were angry at her, saying she was upsetting the balance, while she told them they were just punishing Damon. Somehow she did manage to hear Emily say Klaus’s name before she left. But being the evil being he is, Klaus wouldn’t just give his blood to Damon and be done with it. No, he had to get something in return. And that something was the return of “off the rails” Stefan. He forced Stefan to drink human blood, which by now we all know turns him into a crazed killer. Then after being sure that Stefan would go with him, he gave the blood to Katherine, telling her to leave. She, finally free of Klaus’s compulsion, (or faked compulsion, since she was on vervain), sped off. Surprisingly, she did bring Damon the blood and fed it to him, saying she owed him one. Maybe she did at one point love Damon after all.
Bonnie and Jeremy also faced some grief in last night’s episode, when the sheriff, trying to get to Damon, accidentally shot Jeremy and he died. Not to worry though, of course Bonnie found a way to bring him back to life. She again went to the witches for help, who were at the moment angry with her for wanting to help Damon, and it seemed like they wouldn’t bring Jeremy back. But amazingly, he did wake up in Bonnie’s arms, alive and well. This wasn’t without consequences, however. The season ended with Jeremy being haunted by his two dead girlfriends, Vicky and Anna. Waiting to see what that’s about next season will be torture for sure.
The second season ended, with a mix of happy endings and bad. Of course, the best things to happen were Damon being cured, and Jeremy not being dead. And Caroline finally seems to have an understanding with her mom. But then there’s still the fact that Klaus “killed” Elijah, and forced Stefan to join with him. Waiting to see what happens next will seem like forever for all Vampire Diaries fans.
