The Chris Leben vs. Wanderlei Silva fight had been seemingly years in the making, and it finally went down this past Saturday night in Vegas.
As many expected, the fight didn’t last too long as Chris Leben scored a knockout victory over Silva in a UFC 132 result that had many fans buzzing.
But the Knockout of the Night bonus bonus instead went to Carlos Condit, who knocked out a fellow welterweight title contender in Dong Hyun Kim. Both knockouts came in the first round.
Silva has now lost 6 of his last 8 fights but Leben seemed almost shocked that he was able to knock out one of his idols. In the UFC post-fight press conference, Leben said Silva messed up by cracking him on the button, which always seems to make him crank it up another notch and to go for the knockout, which he scored in this fight.
The Kim vs. Condit fight was expected to be close coming in but Condit proved too much for the decorated grappler Kim as he scored the KO of the night, taking home $75,000 for his first-round stoppage via a flying knee and a flurry of punches in one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory.
Speaking of pocketing some extra cash, Tito Ortiz took home the same amount of money at UFC 132 with a first-round guillotine choke submission victory, the top one of the night, in a win over Ryan Bader.
Bader was a huge favorite going in but Ortiz got the cash and something more important, pride, winning for the first time since 2006. Ortiz has been fighting inside the Octagon for as long as just about anyone and he likely earned himself another fight with the win over the highly-ranked prospect Bader.
Next up for Ortiz could be the winner of Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira although a lot of options remain.
Of course, the main event was the bantamweight bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber for the title. Faber and Cruz staged a back-and-forth battle in the main event but Cruz was able to avenge his earlier loss with a unanimous decision win to retain his belt.
Cruz is one of the most elusive and hard-to-hit fighters in the UFC and he was able to outlast Faber for the title this time around.
The UFC 132 results brought a handful of surprises and a lot of exciting action in what will likely go down as one of the best fight cards of the year in Las Vegas, and the Knockout of the Night win by Condit is something that could propel him close to the top of the division yet again.
