The Shane Carwin vs. Junior dos Santos fight is history, and the result has many MMA fans buzzing after an exciting heavyweight slugfest between two talented, multi-dimensional mixed martial artists.
The MMA warrior dos Santos from Brazil seemed supremely confident going into his fight with Carwin, even gesturing on towards him at the center of the Octagon prior to the fight.
Dos Santos came out cautiously and he did well in the first round, eventually getting Carwin in a similar situation to the one Shane had Brock Lensar in back at UFC 116 in Las Vegas last year.
After feeling it out, Carwin was out-jabbed by dos Santos in the later part of the second round and eventually crumpled to the mat. He ate shot after shot on the ground as “Cigano” postured up behind him and the ref almost called the fight (Herb Dean).
With the heavyweight title shot on the line at UFC 131, Carwin put together a much better second round. He landed a couple solid shots but also ate a head kick and the result seemed as if it was in question yet again despite Carwin fighting with a broken nose.
The second round seemed pretty close overall but it seemed as if Carwin had a slight win outside of the head kick from dos Santos, which was unexpected by many MMA and UFC observers.
Carwin’s power is so strong that dos Santos played it safe in the first part of the third and final round, but the fight remained close with Junior nursing his early lead in the fight.
A jab and a left hook with about 2:15 to go was a big score for “Cigano” as he looked to hold on to his lead and to prevent Carwin from scoring a comeback win similar to the one Lesnar got on him last year.
Another jab and a left hook and things were looking even better for Junior.
Carwin sized him up but couldn’t seem to find distance against the superior technical boxer dos Santos. He threw a counter right that wasn’t quite strong enough as the fight headed toward a minute left and dos Santos holding on to the lead.
Herb Dean separated the two and Carwin took a break, breathing out of his mouth by the side of the cage. The doctor at Octagonside checked him ut and asked if his vision was okay in the middle of the fight, a bizarre situation considering the fight was almost over.
Carwin raised his hand after being declared okay to go for the final minute, and he was able to catch his breath to give him a shot to pull off a big win. But dos Santos shocked everyone with a takedown on the former wrestling champion with under a minute to go.
The fans in Vancouver showed excellent MMA knowledge as they cheered the surprising turn of events. Carwin continued to bleed from his face as dos Santos landed another big takedown.
Carwin managed to secure a nice position on the ground using his wrestling technique but the horn sounded and dos Santos seemingly had secured a big, big win over the former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion.
The judges rendered their decision, and dos Santos was awarded a unanimous decision victory. Cigano’s UFC 131 victory and final result now has him in line for an exciting heavyweight showdown with current champ Cain Velasquez as fans wait with bated breath for him to get healthy.
