China and US are good trading partners but with differing principles in regards to human rights. Although China has constantly had lots of human rights abuses, U.S. has maintained China as its number one trading partner, at the same time working with China to improve human rights. This is an example of how politics and economics are a factor of international relations.
According to the article entitled “Reading China: How do America’s China scholars view U.S. – China relations and China’s future,” U.S. ‘”China relations improved after September 11 terrorist attacks. China remains a good trading partner with the U.S although it is clear these two countries have differing principles in cultural and political aspects. U.S. ‘” China trade relates back when President Richard Nixon visited China in 1972.
Currently in the U.S, there is a growing number of Chinese companies like Gold-wind, Wanxiang, Huawel technologies to mention but a few. These Chinese companies are involved in different trade activities like import and technology. U.S.-China relations have improved. In 2011, when president Hu of China visited U.S, he met with business leaders in Chicago. His discussion focused on industries like energy, automative, real estate, banking and textile. Also, business and government leaders from U.S and China discussed the importance of strategic bilateral relationship.
On the other hand, American companies doing business in China have made U.S.-China relations possible. Although these companies ship American jobs to China, doing business in China has improved U.S.-China relations. These include companies like Motorola, Boeing, A.T, Kearney and Wrigley. According to The New York Times, the White House revealed that China and U.S had made business deals that could fetch $45 billion in American exports.
On the issue of human rights, China has a poor record. The U.S has always criticized China about human rights but both countries remain good partners. China has pledged on improving human. President Obama was quoted saying that the differences on human rights have been the source of tension between the two countries. According to the article in The New York Times (2011) , during his speech, President Hu of China acknowledged that China still faces many challenges in economic and social development and he said that China had a lot to do in terms of human rights.
U.S.-China relations will continue to improve as long as China works on the issue of human rights. Also, both countries will continue reaping trade profits. U.S companies doing business in china like Boeing and Chinese companies doing business in U.S will create a platform for a more social, political and economic understanding between U.S and China. Therefore, it should be noted that politics and economics are a factor of international relations.
