My husband and I selected the Tropica Restaurant & Bar at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa for one of our special dinners out while staying in Maui. We reserved a table with an ocean view in April 2011, and it was ready for us when we arrived at the restaurant. The tabe was situated on a grassy area next to the b each, separated from the sand by a row of hedges on the hotels propert. The other side of the grassy dining area was bordered by a foot path used by Westin guests and others coing to and from the beach. If you are looking for a private, romantic setting, this is not it. If you desire a direct view of the ocean, this spot provides it.
We had read online that the Westin Maui offers delicious cocktails, so we gave those a try. My husband and I both enjoyed the taste of the dragonberry bomb, made from dragonberry rum, elderflower liqueur, fresh blackberries, fresh squeezed limes and sugar cane syrup. It had a great flavor and was the best drink I had on the island. I also tried Pele’s fire, an ice-blended beverage made from mandarin vodka, guava nectar, strawberry puree and champagne. It also had a nice flavor and was a generously sized beverage. My husband also had a glass of the Kung Fu Girl Riesling, which he found a bit too dry for his taste.
Appetizers and Meal
For an appetizer, I selected the lobster chowder, which I found to be average and not worth the $12 price tag. My husband had the spicy lobster flat bread, a mini-pizza which he enjoyed. My entr©e selection was the seared diver scallops with braised fennel puree, kula tomato, arugula, fingerling potato, blood orange reduction. The plate contained four super-sized scallops. I was disappointed in this entr©e. Nothing in the combination of flavors stuck out or gave the meal an above-average taste. My husband had the Pacific bouillabaisse with a half lobster, local fish, clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, saffron potato aioli and focaccia crostini. He felt this fresh seafood dish had a great combination of flavors that rivaled the cioppino he had enjoyed at upscale restaurant Capische (see my review) in Wailea a few days before.
Dessert and Summary
In recognition of our 10-year wedding anniversary, the waitress presented us with a complimentary dessert consisting of a chocolate sponge cake, ice cream and chocolate syrup. The service was good throughout our meal.
Although we were not Westin guests, we did receive complimentary valet parking by having our ticket validated at the restaurant. Our total bill before tip was $150, which included our drinks. I am willing to pay this amount for an excellent meal in Maui, but the food at the Tropica Restaurant & Bar did not live up to my expectations. When I return to Maui, I will try a different restaurant for a special evening on the town.
