Titanic II was a movie that was made in 2010 and went straight to DVD. This movie was directed by Shane Van Dyke; who is the son of Barry Van Dyke and the grandson of Dick Van Dyke; and he also starred in the movie. I was able to watch this movie through Netflix, via the Wii and thought it was an intriguing but a bit weird. To name another ship Titanic was a bit foolish since you are bound to have loads of problems. And alas there were many problems as this new ship made her maiden voyage. At least this time around the warnings were heeded even though they could not possibly do as they were trying to do. This time around the iceberg was not just laying in the water on a dark night like what happened to the original ship and in the movies. In this movie, ice was moved into the ship’s path in the form of a tidal wave of huge proportions and it was a moonlit night. To top it off, the ship set out on its maiden voyage on the same day one hundred years later.
Shane Van Dyke was the director and the one of the main stars of the movie, as well as Bruce Davidson. Bruce Davidson played a U.S. Coast Guard who was the one who warned everyone about the impending disaster. Also starring was Brooke Burns who played a scientist who gives the warning to Bruce Davidson character. It is April 2012 and there is a new ship named Titanic II that will be launching on its maiden voyage. This ship looks like the original and everyone is hoping that nothing bad happens like the original. This ship has up to date technology, enough lifeboats for everyone, and a new style engine system that guarantees that nothing will go wrong. Shane Van Dyke played Hayden Walsh, who owned the ship and one of the rich people on the ship. Bruce Davidson played Captain James Maine, who was sent for by Dr. Kim Patterson, to ask for his help in what she sees as a disaster of epic proportions. A glacier near Greenland comes apart while they are studying the problems. They narrowly escape disaster and discover that the ice will be heading into waters that will eventually be in the Titanic’s way. They send out warnings which are heeded by the crew of the Titanic II, so they can avoid disaster. What they do not know is that they will be in harm’s way anyway since more trouble is brewing. They do everything humanly possible to stay out of harms way and make sure that the passengers know the dangers.
Unfortunately for them, they cannot get out of the way when a huge iceberg and wave crash into the ship and critically damage it. The whole one side of the ship is damaged severely and causes many problems. What lifeboats there were on that side are now destroyed and all the technology that was pulled into this ship is now not working. Even the turbines are damaged, eventually causing an explosion that kills the captain and most of the people. As people are struggling to survive, more ice crashes into the ocean and causes an even bigger tidal wave. This huge wave causes the ship to capsize, kill the remaining passengers and also the people who had escaped in the lifeboats. There were people who had been able to get off the ship when Hayden Walsh offered his helicopter so he could continue helping people. Hayden and another woman; a nurse named Amy Maine, who was the daughter of James Maine, were able to find safety in an area of the ship, survived. They managed to get to safety after experiencing many problems in order to get to that area. Hayden saves Amy but sacrifices himself so she can survive. The Captain arrives after the fact but manages to get them to safety, but Amy cannot revive Hayden. The movie ends with what looks like help arriving too late for the ones who have since died but for the ones who have survived, they are lucky.
It was an interesting movie to watch, even though you know what is going to happen. With the name of Titanic, you know something is bound to happen. I was not expecting what happened, but I knew something was going to happen. I was also not expecting the main star to die, but I guess that happens too. It seems that everything that the people were trying to prevent from happening; happened anyway. It was a good movie to watch, but with the name of the movie Titanic II, you know something bad was going to happen.
