I am sailing the waters of lake Superior, a Martian explorer of 4,000 years ago. Or so it seems, the Martian thought records put you right there sharing the viewpoint, the experience, even the pain, of an expedition which took place in the past. Suddenly the giant head of a plesiosaur breaks the surface of the turbulent, swirling water! Fish or people, the ravenous creature closes in on its prey! The twin hull construction of our ship gives added stability as the the gunners in the prow fire their deadly disintegrator guns! The sea turns red with the blood of the dying beast!
I am Colonel Richard L. Roberts retired from the U.S. military in 2034, called to Mars by my uncle, Robert Wilson, to explore the thought records of the Martians. After retiring, I participated in a number of digs in the Middle East and wrote numerous articles about them. My background as an engineer seems to be another factor in being invited to the struggling Martian colony to explore the thought records of the Martians. These records are very extensive, sort of like the eleventh edition of The Encyclopedia Britannica. Due to the shortage of people to work on it, the study of these extensive records has only scratched the surface, especially the more historical sections. These are an archaeologists dream!
These explorations are especially interesting to us Earthlings. Circa 2,000 B.C., the Martians explored the Earth. You need to understand the nature of these records. They are not simple narratives or even like like video cameras, they are records of the visual impressions and thoughts of the Martian explorers, sort of a virtual reality experience. Sometimes this can be very disconcerting!
The Earth at this time was very sparsely populated and wild animals roamed over vast stretches of it. The barbarism of earth’s inhabitants was a very important factor in the Martian’s choice to live elsewhere. I was really thrilled to have the experience of boarding a Martian shuttle powered by an anti- gravity drive and carried up to a large spacecraft which ended up orbiting the Earth. The thrilling vistas of the starry heavens visible through the many viewports were simply awesome! Then the view of the ancient Earth as we went into orbit around it! A planet much greener and covered with vegetation than now. The Middle East especially! Palestine much more a land of milk and honey than at present!
We descended to the surface in a spherical anti-gravity ship which was such fun to travel in! More maneuverable than a helicopter, it was perfect for flitting about, dodging the the stone age spears and eluding the giant dinosaurs.
This was the age of The Fertile Crescent, a semi-circle around the Arabian Desert, a multiplicity of civilizations lying side by side Here lay the center of civilization from the Stone Age to the Golden Age of Graeco-Roman culture! It is the height of the Minoan kings of Crete, a second Troy had long stood on the ruins of the first, in Sardinia and Western France the dead were being buried in vast stone tombs, and in Britain they were building The Temple of the Sun at Stonehenge. In the Fertile Crescent and in Egypt highly developed cultures stood side by side, Egypt, stretching from Nubia to beyond the Sinai peninsula to Cainan and Syria. Along the Mediterranean coast, Tyre and Sidon, seaports of the Phoenecians, in Asia Minor, the Hittite empire just beginning and between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Sumer and Akkad. All this like a light amidst the darkness of surrounding Stone age cultures!
What an opportunity to see, in these ancient Martian records glimpses of the societies and their monumental architecture! This put me in a very peculiar position. The thought records are so real! They place me right there sharing the viewpoint of Martian explorers, emotionally reacting to the situations they are experiencing, yet unable to do anything about it or see more of what I would wish to see. When attacked by a huge Eoraptor during a hunting expedition, unable to move, then, thankfully, my Martian host drilled it with a powerful disintegrator beam, just in time! I might have liked it if he had been quicker on the draw!
It was here that the Martians had developed their psychological weapons which induced paralyzing fear. The utter savagery of the barbarians and even the more civilized nations appalled the Martians. They had no wish to kill several thousand human beings in one stroke just to provide for their own safety. Their force field capacity solved some of these problems but only partially. On occasion they had to disintegrate a company of soldiers but this was very unsatisfactory in many ways. For the most part, they wished to explore, observe and evaluate, making as few waves as possible. So once they developed their psychological beam, they could induce fear which stopped their enemies in their tracks and allowed the Martians to escape.
Digging about through these records, I unearthed many things, Biblical Haran for one, discovered by archeologists in the nineteen thirties as crumbling ruins in Syria but when the Martians visited it full of splendor. Abraham was in Ur of the Chaldees when the Lord commanded him to leave (Gen. 12). On his 1,500 mile pilgrimage he stopped at Haran. The kingdom of Mari, with its huge palace of nearly 300 rooms, the outline still visible from the air. But then, magnificent! The temple of Dagon and also the ziggerat, elsewhere, a temple of Ishtar. Roads and canals with locks spreading in all directions. Irrigation one important factor in the riches of this architectural gem of the Ancient East. Travelers came from far and near to see it! “I have seen Mari,” wrote an enthusiastic traveler from Phoenician Ugarit.
We flew over The pyramids of Egypt, the Nile as it was 4000 years ago, The Sphinx decked out in layers of gold ornimentation, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Palace of Knossos on Crete was built about this time. We viewed it and the bull ceremonies of leaping acrobatic figures risking their lives. This was an earlier stage, not so elaborate as the version unearthed by Sir Arther Evans, but still with massive pillars and elaborate, colorful paint schemes. The Minoan pottery was some of the most attractive in the ancient world and the most imaginative design. A variety of colors-orange, red, yellow and white were used on the dark body of the vessel and the motifs either abstract or non-representational plant life are brilliant decorative art.
The abundance of dinosaur life was not too much of a surprise to a student of history like myself. Ever since 1868 when Schliemann discovered the ruins of Troy right where Homer said they were, we have had to realize that myth and legend often has a core of historic truth. There really was a Troy, there really was A Golden Fleece, etc. That flood stories and dragon stories were world wide was something that couldn’t be denied to have historical truth behind them.
The Bible mentioned behemoth (Job 40:15) and the Apocrapha “Bel and the Dragon”. Willy Ley, pioneering member of The German Rocket Society along with Hermann Oberth which popularized the idea of space travel, in his Exotic Zoology wrote about the Dragon of the Ishtar Gate, pointing out that The Ishtar Gate of Babylon had seven creatures depicted on it, six of them known animals and thus it is reasonable to believe the dragon was also a known animal. John of Damascus, a man of unquestionable integrity, writing in the 7th century, said there was a lot of superstition about Serpents (his name for what others called dragons) “but don’t think I disbelieve in them.” There are thousands of European chronicles stretching over many centuries relating the fact that a dragon came into the district, frightened the inhabitants, consumed the farmers livestock until someone went out and killed it. Not till the 16th century did Europeans stop writing about dragons. For over two hundred years inhabitants of the Congo have reported a dinosaur living in their district. In 1999 an expedition sent there questioned the natives and one of the members actually saw one. In 1880 two fellows killed a Pterodactyl out West.
All these reports, it’s amazing that so many clung to the lies of the evolutionists that dinosaurs became extinct millions of years ago. Thank God, by the thirties of this century, evolutionism became completely discredited. Modern collegiate dictionaries usually give as the 4th meaning of evolutionist: “pathological liar”.
So many interesting things showed up in the records! The fact that Pterodactyls were distributed almost world wide. The Martians witnessed an Iguanodon migration. Traveling along a river bank, they were accompanied by Hypsilophodons which, as everyone knows, were about six feet long with their long tails, Iguanodons were over thirty feet long. The Martians hunted them for food. One thought record put me right on the spot. The Martians attacked a straggler at the end of the herd. Iguanodons were relatively fast but nowhere near as dangerous as a Tyranosaur. Responding to the Martian threat, the Iguanodon charged. Its over thirty tons made this like facing a runaway locomotive. The smaller dinosaurs scattered. A martian hunter drilled it with his disintegrator and jumped to one side, avoiding having it fall on him. The other Iguanodons didn’t come to its defense, possibly because the Martian weapon killed almost silently. The herd moved on and the Martians waited for the their anti-gravity ships to arrive. The Iguanodon was sliced into sections, fitted with anti-gravity lifters and hauled off to their camp. This provided them with meat for many days.
Another record concerned hunting the Tyrannosaurus rex, or T. Rex as some refer to it. Typically over forty feet long and thirteen feet high, a most formidable beast, indeed! Again, I was placed in the middle of the action! A hunting party of over a dozen had one cornered. The beast charged, snarling, defiant! The Martian strategy was to keep it surrounded so someone could get a clear shot. It went straight for the lead hunter, traveling over twenty miles an hour. He tripped over a tree root, staggering forward, or I should say, I did, the record putting me inside his skin. Next I saw nothing but its huge gaping, open jaws lined with its knifelike carnivorous teeth. I was enveloped in darkness and excruciating pain! One horrified scream and the record ended, leaving me sitting in darkness in a cold sweat. I reflected that truly the race is not to the swift nor bread to the wise, but time and chance happens to us all.
How like virtual reality only better! In this case maybe too much better! That was the end of a long day of research. How nice to have my loving wife, Linda to go home to and flush this out of my mind!
