“Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That’s because we help where help is needed ‘” in our own communities and around the world ‘” with unmatched integrity and energy.”
When I became aware of the Lion’s Club members invading the Marriott (Pitt, North) for their convention, my mind flashed back to my daughter. They helped us, in getting glasses for her. The Lions have a program where people can donate their old glasses, and they are reused for others. The Lions Club does so much more, for nearly 100 years, the members of the Lions have worked to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye care for hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
Lions volunteer to take part in sight projects that are saving the sight of more than 14 million children by providing eye screenings, and glasses. I thought it concentrated only on the vision of children, however it is more extensive than that.
This group helps prevent serious vision loss for more than 30 million people worldwide by providing more than 7 million cataract surgeries, establishing or strengthening pediatric eye care centers that have helped more than 120 million children.
In, fact, since 1990, Lions have donated more than $350 million to help provide vision services for all ages. Lions have gained worldwide recognition for our work to improve sight. Our members around the world are also actively involved in recycling eyeglasses. This was the service I was aware of, I did not know that they that provide eye tissue for sight-saving surgeries, screening the vision of hundreds of thousands of people every year, as well as providing treatment to those at risk of losing their vision.
The Lions Club is comprised of 45,000 clubs and 1.35 million members make us the world’s largest service club organization. I believe it would be an honor to be a member of this organization, to be able to make a difference.
A Lion member told me, “We’re also one of the most effective. We get the job done. Everywhere we work, we make friends.” They also help those that need schoolbooks or aiding those, particularly seniors who need transportation. While the Lions Club is known for its work with vision, they also have other humanitarian projects.
Yearly they have conventions and the Pennsylvania Lions Club has invaded the Marriott (Pittsburgh, North), wherever you look you see them in their green and white attire. This is their spring and summer dress, while in the fall and winter it is gray and green.
You will also see license plares with Governor on their vehicles. It was not until I saw this convention did I realize how much this group gives of themselves, not only locally but internationally , they are a very kind organization, and their members reflect it. They are proud of the services that they help provide, and their mission to help others is their ultimate goal.
