Themed tours are very popular today focusing on the traveler’s special interests. Since Thai cuisine is enjoyed around the world, many people like to learn the art of Thai cooking. We stopped for a cooking class at the renowned M. L. Puang- the Royal Exquisite Thai Culinary Center. I emphasize the word renowned because the culinary center is owned by the family of M. L. Puang Dinakara, grandmother of the school’s founder, who was the chef of HRM the king and his family. Her culinary creations were unique interpretations of traditional Thai dishes. Not only did we learn to cook Thai cuisine, but the finest recipes of royalty!
We each stood at our own stove with all of the ingredients for the first dish. The teacher and her assistant advised and helped us as we continued to cook each course. It was hard to believe we were preparing a feast of Thai delicacies, an entire buffet for us to eat. The teacher chose many simple-to-make dishes with just a few which were more complex. If I could cook these dishes, then anybody can! Besides the delicious flavors of each dish, their presentation added to our enjoyment. The hot and spicy prawn soup was served in a coconut with the shrimp hanging out on top. Some of the other dishes we ate included: Stir fried Thai noodles with king prawn wrapped in an omelet, chicken curry served in a potato, fish with sweet and sour chili sauce, pork green curry, and many more. We learned several ways to make table and plate decorations with flowers, banana leaves and bamboo.
The M. L. Puang School offers basic, advanced and special classes. Usually when eating in a Thai restaurant, we wonder about the ingredients in these flavorful dishes. Here we cook from scratch. If you are maintaining a health or weight diet, just leave out any of the ingredients or spices you do not want. Learning to cook Thai cuisine is a skill you can take home and surprise your friends. The class only took two hours and afterwards everyone sat in the dining room to eat our Thai cuisine feast.
