Are we not going around in circles more often with each passing day? Have we reached the end of our tether, mired as we are with endless problems mostly self-inflicted? We never really got along well throughout history though there were golden eras when great personalities held sway over our fortunes and even fate. But soon after, we were back to our own devises of mutual distrust spread across various segments of societies and, even sadly, within families. Some seem to relish a life of discordant notes, spreading misery to others more attuned to a wholesome life of mutual cooperation and empathy.
Tempting fate takes various forms. We hoard weapons of mass destruction, justifying them as for own security! Also meant to prevent us from going overboard as use of the ultimate could spell end of human race even! Those who are left to pick up the pieces, if at all, will be left with a harsh choice ‘” practically left between a hard place of nothingness and a barren rock! But such scenario does not seem to faze us as we feel life will go on as usual. The trigger point can come anytime as many are out to possess or even seize such weapons as bargaining chips or blow them in their hope of reaching a waiting heaven!
Then, we have billions joining the race of unsustainable life in every way. Our finite resources are getting depleted but we have no qualms with leaving a barren planet for future generations. Our lives border on excesses and living much beyond our means. We live on credit and leave future generations to clean up after us and pay our bills and for our ills! We have lost touch with reality. The problems are created faster than we can find solutions for them! Some are quick-fixes that could bring the entire roof down. The hard options are just beyond even considering. We lack the cohesion to live through them with the necessary sacrifices that go with such options.
The pressure points are clearly felt with each passing day. The naysayers seem to hold sway that all will end well. Why bother at all? Even if we crack our brains, we will not make much of a dent on the issues. In the end, the common man has to leave his fate in the hands of those who hold sway. We become fatalistic in a way; Que Sera, Sera ‘” whatever will be, will be! As long as the music plays, let us dance with gay abandon!
With such outlook pervading that we are insignificant part of the whole, with no real belief in our ability to turn things around for the better, most would be left with a life of guilt that we are unfair to our future generations, and will end up leaving an inhospitable world increasingly with each passing day. Our demands on the finite resources are definitely felt, with even competition to corner them at the cost of others who cannot afford the price or enter the race even! There is already much wastage with inequitable allocation of land away from agriculture in poorer countries. These ways of recklessness has meant commodity prices on the upswing. Increasingly, more are malnourished and fighting to survive in a man-eat-man world with nary a room for compassion.
Can we reverse the trend and pull back from the brink before we reach a point of no return? When technology is lauded for bringing down authoritative and brutal regimes, why are we impervious to clear signs of distress everywhere? Even richer countries are fighting to keep the lid over simmering discontent underneath, threatening to break out to the open. The governments are more intent on treating the symptoms than the disease; buying time month-by-month through hotchpotch agreements at the last minute or even past such times!
There is no need for specialists to diagnose our moral decay. We have conscience that pricks every day. We have degraded nature and our paths are fraught. We need to cut losses soon than race headlong in a race where there will be no winners. The liabilities and assets will merge in the end as entire humanity goes down a deep hole that we are busy digging! It behooves us to prompt our leaders that enough is enough of this mindless path to ruin. Let sanity and wiser counsel prevail soonest!
