When beginning to train your Chihuahua, it is best to start with one trick and be sure that the Chihuahua is able to perform the trick perfectly before starting on a new one. It usually takes a Chihuahua a week or two to completely mastered a trick.
The best trick to start off with is sit. Start with holding the treat clasped in your hand. Hold your hand over his nose and graze it back past his head. Nine times out of ten, the Chihuahua will sit. Once he does, give the Chihuahua a treat. Continue this process till he can sit automatically. That is when you can start to say “sit” as the Chihuahua sits waiting for the treat.
Lie down should be the next trick the Chihuahua learns. Keep in mind that lay is a hard trick for Chihuahua’s to learn. To start off with, put the Chihuahua into the sitting position. Once he sits, take the treat and slowly move the treat from his nose to the ground. When the Chihuahua follows the treat, slowly move the treat towards you till he lies down. When he lies down give him the treat. When the Chihuahua gets the hang of the movements, start saying “lie”.
When teaching come, it is best to make sure the Chihuahua knows his name. Put the Chihuahua into the sitting position and stand a small distance away from the Chihuahua. Say “Come here, (Chihuahua’s name)!” When the Chihuahua comes, congratulate the Chihuahua and put him in the sitting position once again. This time put a little more distance between you and the Chihuahua. Do the same thing. Keep working at this trick varying the distance between you and the Chihuahua.
Stay is another difficult trick for a Chihuahua to learn. This is because the Chihuahua wants to stay with its owner at all times. Put him into the lay position. Hold a treat in your hand and say “stay”. If he gets up then say “oops” and put the treat behind your back. Tell the Chihuahua to sit and then lay, move away form the Chihuahua, say “stay” and if the Chihuahua can stay for 20 seconds give him the treat and congratulate him. This trick is not fully learned till the Chihuahua can stay with several distractions in place.
Down is a very easy trick for a Chihuahua to learn. If the Chihuahua jumps up your leg, put your foot up or knee the Chihuahua softly. It will not take him long to realize not to do this anymore. Start saying down when you feel the Chihuahua knows that he should not jump up.
It is always best to teach a Chihuahua tricks when sitting on the ground with him. It puts you at eye level with him and he does not feel as intimidated. Also, do not punish the Chihuahua when he does not do the tick correctly. A Chihuahua is like a child. And will react like a child as well.
