I’m scratching my head in wonderment. Just what do these Tea Party people want? We know what they don’t want. But what in the heck do they actually want? I realize initially, when they were raising Cain during the health care issue, it was all about “don’t kill granny” and, “don’t make me pay for my Medicare”. Both of which were asinine in context, however this mantra morphed into “America’s in debt; there are no jobs; so we need to stop spending…on everything”. Well, not quite everything. We still needed to spend a gosh awful amount on the military (even though we didn’t need to help initiate a no-fly zone over Libya). The original tea party that raised hell by throwing all the tea from a ship into the Boston harbor to protest taxes paid to the King in 1773 made sense. This act was necessary, and a precursor to gaining our independence. It also required guts, a strong constitution, and stick-to-itiveness.
With this being said, I feel I know what contemporary Tea Party members don’t want. A big government, and any new taxes. I just don’t know what they do want. For instance, the new budget that was finally agreed to by John Boehner and Harry Reid carried a $38.5 billion price tag, and of course some of the democrats key programs were sliced with a kitchen knife, not carved up like a Christmas turkey. So, nobody is really upset, except of course the infamous Tea Party. Tea Party people are hot under their collars because not enough spending was curtailed in this budget.
Let’s go over a brief synopsis of what representative Boehner managed to cut out of the budget for about 5 1/2 months in 2011. And, inasmuch as Boehner was representing the overwhelming majority of tea totalers, we’ll see what these guys and gals got out of the deal.
$600,000,000 in cuts to community health care center programs.
That’s $600 million dollars, over 21 or 22 weeks. President Obama had to be gritting his teeth like a guy who just tried to bite down on a jawbreaker with this one. Community health care centers are a vital necessity to urban, and rural communities. And when I say a vital necessity I mean, in many cases, the difference between living and dying. Most of the customers who visit these centers are poor and destitute. Have we become so callous, and dis concerned about the have nots in our society, we just throw them to the wolves? Well, chalk up one for the mean segment of Tea Party.
$414,000,000 in cuts for state and local police departments.
I don’t know about you, but I love knowing the criminal elements in our society are being held in check. Read your local, and national newspapers. I can’t see where crime levels have dipped so much as to insinuate we’re all that top heavy in law enforcement. I truly believe, if one was to survey every citizen in this nation, with the question “would you be willing to pay a little more tax wise, to prevent crime”, seventy percent would answer yes. The only folks voting against this tax hike would be criminals, and Tea Party people. Chalk one up for the incognizant Tea Party segment.
$1.6 billion cut from the Energy Protection Administration.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been a bugaboo to republicans even before the tea party movement. So, I won’t rag on the Lipton crowd for this one. But I do have one question for my more conservative brethren. Imagine for a moment I’m Clint Eastwood staring down at you with a .44 magnum…do you feel lucky? well, do you punk?
Protecting our environment is a serious issue. I can remember when that was a bi-partisan issue. This is where I blame the tea party koch segment of the republican party.
$5 billion sliced by capping payments from a fund awarding compensation for crime victims
OK, so you cut funds for law enforcement, on top of cutting awards for crime victims? Who heads up the tea party? Al Capone?
This is totally and utterly ridiculous. Crime victims are probably the most vulnerable citizens in our society. The crime rate isn’t going down. Thus the victims of crime are not dissipating. I really had to not only scratch my head, but rub my eyes as well. Unbelievable. We can chalk this up to the Grinch segment of the Tea Party.
Now, I can’t say with impunity that a majority of tea party people are members of the National Rifle Association…but I’d be willing to wager there are more tea party republicans in the NRA, than any other political party. Anyway, the NRA actually attempted to block people running guns to Mexican drug lords by having regulators gather information on batch purchases of rifles and shotguns. Woooo…my head is spinning around like that young possessed girl in the Exorcist. The NRA actually tried to block our being able to not sell firearms to dope dealers. What’s next for the NRA, replacing toy guns at Wal-Marts with real, live oozies and glocks?
These weren’t all the savings representative Boehner and his tea party people managed to negotiate. But speaking on behalf of the poor, environmentally conscience, law abiding, and physically disabled segment of America…We think you’ve done quite enough to us. Now, how about concentrating on making the rich pay their fair share.
