As Survivor Redemption Island Episode 10 begins, Matt is praying. He is having difficulty hanging on at Redemption Island, but is fighting. David joins him and Mike on the island. They aren’t sure what is going on, with three people on the island. They don’t know when there will be the next duel, or if there might be more than three people in it.
Murlonio at Camp
The Murlonio tribe is still divided among former tribe lines. The three former Zapatera members are still sticking together, practically ignored by the former Ometepe tribe members.
Phillip meditates on a rock by himself. Isn’t that a violation of Rob’s buddy system? He has had a premonition about his grandfather, which means something about Rob, according to him.
The former Zapatera members still have tons of food. Evidently, the two groups are still behaving like two different tribes, and taking it to the extreme; they haven’t even combined their food supplies yet. The former Ometepe members do not have a lot of food, because they are not willing to combine their food supplies
All of the people come to the duel to witness the competition. When Jeff asked how Matt felt, he remarked “I never knew how strangers could hurt me so deeply.”
For the duel, Matt, Dave, and Mike are to build a house of cards out of tablets. The first two people to build their house eight feet tall would move on, and the person in third place would end up leaving. Mike was in the lead, with Matt shortly behind. Mike was almost at the eight feet mark, but was having trouble with the very last tier of his cards. He didn’t want it to topple over and have to start all over again. As Mike dealt with his last card, Matt and David started to catch up. Mike managed to build his cards up to come in first place. Matt came in second, and David became the first member of the jury.
Back at Camp
Andrea discovered that there were maggots in the rice. The container that their rice was in had gotten damp and had mold in the bottom. They dump out the rice onto a blanket; then they believe that they have nowhere to put their rice. They ask if they can put the rice in the pot with Zapatera, but Steve isn’t really going for it
The discussion escalates, when Steve calls Phillip a lunatic (which is what everybody else is thinking). Phillip tells Steve that he is calling him a lunatic because he is black. He even insinuates that Steve meant to call him the N word, although he never actually used it. Phillip claims that he is a counter-intelligence expert and a Wang-chung martial arts expert (isn’t that a musical group?). Never mind the fact that Steve spent a career in the NFL working with black people. Steve tells Rob that they are going to vote for Phil, hoping that he would get his followers to vote him out too.
The Survivor Challenge
For the challenge, they had to solve a puzzle in the shape of a circle. The first group would solve a small puzzle; six would move on. Before they could start the puzzle, they would first have to unscrew a circular plate to solve their puzzle on, which was attached to a pole. They would have to do this by moving their whole body around the pole, rather than just turning it. Several were left dizzy after finishing. Rob solved the puzzle first, followed by Julie and Ralph. Andrea, Steve, and finally Grant filled out the six people that were going to move on.
In the second round, they would expand the circle by placing puzzle pieces around the center, which they built in the first segment. Rob, being good with puzzles, won the challenge immunity. There was no reward.
Back at Camp
Back at camp, Zapatera is feasting on rice, while the rest of the tribe is hungry. Julie buried Phillip’s swim trunks, leaving Phillip with just his faded red underwear. He was very upset about this, and lashed out at some of his tribemates. Most of the people on the tribe are upset with him, even the members of his alliance.
At Tribal Council, Jeff brought up the issue with Phillip’s clothes. Phillip said that his former training told him that Steve was the person that hid them. They brought up how the rice situation led to the N word being brought up. Phillip thought that when Steve called him crazy, it was the equivalent to him calling the N word. Steve brought up the fact that he played in the NFL and only one fifth of the team that he played on was white.
Jeff asked where the shorts were, and Julie fessed up to hiding the shorts. She told him that they were in the ground with a rock over them.
Although Philip seems to be crazy, he was not voted out. Rob had convinced his tribe to vote Julie out. His alliance still seems to be fully under his control.
