This is an update of my previous article “Quitting Smoking with Champix”. I wrote that article on the fourth day of being smoke free. Today I am on my forty-first day of living without tobacco in my life. I wanted to do an update mostly because it seems easier for someone to write an article like my first one after four days than it is after forty-one days. If you haven’t read my other article I invite you to as I’m not going to touch on how I planned my quit date or any of the details that the first one contained.
Firstly, the title says “Success” and with quitting smoking a lot of us know that it’s hard to measure success with such a tricky addiction. But, I can honestly say that I will never smoke again. After this long of being able to enjoy life without the dependency of a drug, I know that I won’t go back to being a smoker. I think it was in the first week of quitting that I said to my Mom “Everything is better”. And if you think about what a cigarette contains, how could it not be? A burning cigarette contains more than 4000 chemicals. There are more chemicals in a cigarette than what you clean your toilet with.
I’ve been talking to a lot of people about smoking and quitting these past forty-one days & I’ve come to realize that tobacco is an extremely powerful drug. If you think about it it is the only thing, outside of money, that a stranger will come up & ask you for. It’s so powerful that you feel you can’t live without it. And it’s the tobacco companies that make it that way. There is only enough nicotine to get you feeling “good” for half an hour. After that you feel the need for another one. You have to keep replacing the nicotine. They do that on purpose so that you will smoke twenty a day. They put things in them that make you feel panicked if you don’t have any with you. It’s powerful. And that’s one of the reasons I know I will never smoke again. Here I am over a month of being free of it & wanting to stay free of it. I’ve been thinking of all the things I love about being without a dependency for cigarettes. The thing is one dose will get you hooked. If you don’t believe that ask yourself how you or someone you know who smokes got hooked. No one plans to become addicted to it. Most people try it & within a week or two will buy their first pack. It could turn into a life time of not being able to be without cigarettes on hand. And most of the smokers want to stop but don’t know how. It’s frightening to think that people (the tobacco companies) produce this drug all in the name of profit. They know it’s killing people. They know it’s hard to get free of it. And now they are targeting teens because some people are able to get off of them & the profits are going down. They do so much research to keep you addicted – only for profit.
On a friendlier side: you can stop smoking. You absolutely can. I think any method of quitting that keeps you quit is a fantastic way to go. Me? I’ve tried a lot of different ways to get free of my addiction to nicotine. I’ve tried the patches. I’ve tried the lozenges. I’ve tried cold turkey. I tried to use “The Easyway” by Allen Carr. And this is my second time on Champix. The first time I was on Champix I didn’t take the full prescription & I “felt” like having a cigarette. Bam! I was hooked again. Within two days of that cigarette I was back to buying packs on a regular basis. This time on Champix I am taking it all very seriously. I know how powerful they are. It’s not us that is weak. It’s the drug that is powerful. They design them to make us life long users.
Within the first week of quitting I noticed that my chest felt a lot lighter. I went to bed one night & I could feel that a heavy weight had been taken off. I used to go to bed when I was a smoker & feel so worn out. Now I go to bed & I stretch a little & I actually feel good. I can smell again & taste. Wow. It’s amazing how nice it is to walk passed a flower garden & smell all of the beautiful scents. I smell good again. That makes me so happy. I was at work one day & we sell cigarettes where I work. A fairly nice looking woman came up to my till & the first thing that hit me was the smell. She didn’t actually smell like a smoker. She smelt dirty. She wasn’t dirty. She was a smoker & she smelt … not nice. It really stuck with me. Like I said … everything is better.
So far I’ve saved on not buying cigarettes $295.20. I have paid $198.97 for the Champix. I have one month left to buy of the prescription but I will always be in the good now. I buy some today (Two week’s worth) @ $51.11. I’m still ahead. At this point I will always be saving money. In two weeks when I buy the last of my prescription I will be saving even more.
Champix works for me. Quitting smoking is highly mental. I’ve talked to a few people who say they tried Champix & it didn’t work for them. I dig a bit deeper & they say they missed the night pill because of the dreams. Champix often gives you vivid dreams. I’m enjoying them. And one other person I talked to who is on Champix says she’s bought smokes & that she can’t do it without the Champix. I’ve seen her take her pill (we work together). She isn’t taking them at the same time each day. It states you need to. So, if you decide you want to stop smoking & you want to try Champix, read the pamphlet you get with your starter pack. Read my first article “Quitting Smoking with Champix” to see how I picked my quit date & the importance, for me, that decision made. After you stop smoking & you are breaking your associations, notice the good things that are happening to you because you aren’t smoking. Always remember tobacco is a powerful drug. Never let your guard down. The way I think about it is: what life do I prefer? That of a smoker or that of a non-smoker? And that is how I am staying smoke free. I don’t crave cigarettes anymore. I have had a couple of times if one was in front of me I would have smoked it. But I didn’t & I didn’t go out & get one either.
A friend of mine has been off cigarettes using Champix for close to three years. We talked the other day & she said there have been times when she wanted a cigarette. She said she will never smoke another cigarette in her life. She has had cravings but she knows what one cigarette will do. It will put you back into the life of being a smoker. She said she just gets over it & feels good that she KNOWS she will never smoke again. Our bodies are not designed to inhale tobacco. They aren’t. The first thing you do is cough when you inhale your first drag. That’s your body trying to push out the chemicals. It’s saying to you “This is bad”.
Remember: You have the choice as to how you want to live. If you want to stop smoking – you will. I hope you find the method that works best for you & I know you will be happier, healthier & you will save a small fortune by doing so!!!
