With Street Fighter X Tekken in the works, fans of the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises and new players alike have a whole new reason to concern themselves with fighting game peripherals. Since the style of the game appears (at least for now) to look a lot like Street Fighter 4, the best fighting game controller to use will likely still be the Mad Catz Tournament Edition FightStick. I’ve got one, and I can say without lying that it is easily the best controller I’ve ever owned. If you want a fantastic fighting game experience, by all means pick one up. Still, there is something you may want to keep in mind:
Buying a Mad Catz TE FightStick won’t be cheap.
I’ll admit that getting a Madcatz Tournament Edition stick was painful at first. Very painful. “You might be eating instant oatmeal for every meal for a few weeks to recover from the stick’s personal economic stress” painful. The price point on the stick is insane. If you’re planning on buying a TE stick, plan on spending at least $130 USD. Amazon generally features the best prices for these sticks. If you look closely around fighting game forums, you may be able to find special deals on these sticks as well.
Here’s a corny way to justify the cost: Going out to see a movie costs about ten dollars, not including snacks and drinks. It’s far cheaper to see a movie than to buy a TE stick, but you’ll get hundreds of times more hours of entertainment from the stick than from the movie! So it’s all okay! …right? Oh boy. Moving on…
What Makes the TE Stick so Great?
The Tournament Edition of the FightStick contains authentic Japanese Sanwa arcade parts. Believe it or not, this is very important. The quality of these parts is noticeable. The buttons can be pressed with very, very little force. This makes move execution all the more easy in a fighting game. The joystick is precise and sturdy, yet flows wonderfully. Again, when it comes to fighting game input, this is a very important feature.
Switching from a TE stick also means switching to a very intuitive controller. Your range and ease of movement with the joystick feels very natural.
Another very nice feature of the stick is its ability to be modified or repaired. Should you somehow throw your stick out the window in a fit of rage after losing 28 matches in a row and break your joystick, another can be purchased and installed very easily.
Why a TE Stick for Street Fighter X Tekken?
Keep in mind that while the TE FightStick is a top quality controller, that isn’t the only reason to consider it for the fighting games of the future. Street Fighter X Tekken will allow players to play with different controller schemes in order to allow players from both franchises to use their favorite and most natural feeling scheme. The TE stick can adapt to each scheme, since it has absolutely no lack of available buttons and optional button layouts. This is a great feature. If you’re a fan of Street Fighter and Tekken, or perhaps your friend is a fan of one and you’re a fan of the other, you (and your friend, I guess) can enjoy a stick that supports many layout options.
