Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas never disappoints when it comes to doing or saying something off putting. That was the case at a hearing about Muslim radicalization in prisons when she expressed worry about “Christian militants”, according to CNS News.
Patrick Dunleavy, the former deputy inspector of the criminal intelligence unit, New York Department of Correctional Services, was being grilled in the witness chair when Rep. Lee posed the following, “As we look to be informational, we should include an analysis of how Christian militants or others might bring down the country. We have to look broadly, do we not?”
Dunleavy responded, “I don’t know that Christian militants have foreign country backing or foreign country financing.”
Rep. Lee bore in on the question, “I don’t think that’s the issue. The issue is whether or not their intent is to undermine the laws of this nation. And I think it is clear that that is the case. So it’s not — your distinction is not answering the question.”
Lee was behaving like a Hollywood producer when, while casting around for the villains for the next action movie, specifically eschews Islamofascist villains in preference for some other group that is more politically acceptable. Central European Neo Nazis have been trotted out from time to time. But the Vast Christian Militant Conspiracy will do just as well.
If the gentle reader has missed all of those instances of Christian militants flying airplanes into building, blowing themselves and others up in public places, and preaching crusade against civilization, then he or she is not alone. True there has been the occasional deranged individual who has blown up an abortion clinic. But there is no evidence of a Christian version of Al Qaida or a Christian version of Osama bin Laden hiding out in the hills somewhere plotting against the peace.
There are two explanations for Rep. Lee’s outburst. One is that she really believes that a conspiracy of cross bearing evil doers is out to get her. The other, and more plausible, explanation is that she was trying to obfuscate the issue. Why she would want to do this is another matter.
Trotting out the Great Christian Menace was a bit gratuitous, demonstrating a lack of seriousness about terrorism. Unique of all the world’s religions, Islam has inspired the belief in a few people that their version of the will of God must be spread throughout the world, not through moral persuasion and argument, but through violence and terror. To be sure that vast majority of Muslims do not adhere to this view. But enough do to disturb the peace of the world. Sheila Jackson Lee should take heed and act accordingly and not, as she seems to like to do, as a clown.
