AceShowbiz and other media outlets are reporting that Selena Gomez, the Disney actress turned pop music star, has received several death threats since photos of her and teen heartthrob Justin Bieber frolicking in the Hawaiian surf were published online. The two have been rumored to have been dating since December but both have insisted publicly that they were “just friends.” But it appears that now the “just friends” status has been upgraded to a relationship where public displays of affection are no longer something to be denied. And with it comes the hazards of dating Justin Bieber…
As has been the case in the past, the threats have been offered via social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. One of Justin’s fan posted to Twitter: “Selena Gomez is dangerously close to a long, slow painful death.” Another wrote, “I’m gonna kill ya in the night underneath your smell bed.”
TMZ listed more: “I’ll kill you I swear on GOD!!!!” and “If you are the Girlfriend of Justin I will Kill you I HATE YOU :@ !!!”
Twitter is 17-year-old Bieber’s domain. An avid user, he recently topped the 10 million followers mark.
Besides numerous Twitter threats, Gomez, who is 18, has also been threatened on Facebook. A page entitled “I hate Selena Gomez cuz she is dating my man,” has amassed several thousand followers, most of whom have taken to leaving hate-filled comments toward Gomez.
“If Selena Gomez breaks Justin Bieber’s heart,” one declares, “I will break her face I will kill her without kindness.”
Still, Gomez is undoubtedly used to the verbal abuse by now. A similar spate of Twitter and Facebook hate erupted just after TMZ and BauerGriffinOnline posted photos of the two enjoying each other’s company during a holiday trip in December. Another volley of death threats followed the January rumor that she was pregnant with Justin’s baby.
And Selena Gomez isn’t the only person who became the target of death threats because of her relationship with Justin Bieber. Reality show celebrity Kim Kardashian found out that to even joke about being more than “just friends” with Bieber can make one the target of numerous death threats.
It all began after Justin, then 16, posted a Twitter picture of Kardashian and himself. The picture was one of several taken when the two met for the first time at the White House Correspondents Dinner in early 2010. With the Twitpic, Bieber wrote, “Look its my girlfriend.”
He would later take to Twitter again to assure his threatening fans that he and Kardashian were only friends. Kardashian greeted the threats with humor and, in one public appearance, displayed a t-shirt emblazoned with the words, “Mrs. Bieber.”
