As I sat and watched this picture, I was very drawn to this woman that had 15 different personalities. I would think having this many personalities could be quite exhausting to the body physically and mentally. She was asked if many people new about her condition. Although she stated, “Only a few,” now that it had aired on national television, I am sure there would probably be many more including myself that were aware about it. It was mentioned that at one point they thought Paula was bipolar.
Could you imagine knowing that you are different, but not knowing why. As I watched her at family events, family members indicated they sometimes would need to be careful of how they talked with Paula, because some of the personalities would emerge to protect Paula, if there was a feeling of being taken advantage of. If Paula felt threatened the other personalities would emerge.
According to Paula there had been physical and emotional abuse during her childhood.
The one personality would come out so that Paula would not have to endure the pain of it. The different personalities ranged from Mariah, a 5-year-old to several adults. Some of the personalities were female and male. All of the personalities seem to have a purpose that they fulfilled. One personality that stood out to me was Jonathan, who could shoot backward basketballs. He was just awesome. This was amazing to see, while another personality the sweet 5-year-old would just lie on the bed and color.
I observed that as she looked in the mirror, she apparently did not see Paula, but could see each personality as they appeared one by one. Each personality had their own distinctive characteristics that were clearly shown through the
reflection of the mirror. I never imagined looking into a mirror and seeing a different person other than myself. The personalities ranged from children to teenagers to adults.
Another personality was called Radar. He was said by Paula to be the personality that could asses people from the beginning.
It was intriguing as Paula sat talking with the doctor, you could see the different personalities as they emerged.
This was a very interesting program and even more interesting to hear and watch Paula’s story.
