All the attention this May 21st doomsday nonsense has generated has me thinking. I’m thinking about my grandfather, who is a religious zealot if ever there was one. He’s harmless, thank goodness, but believes some very strange things. It makes me wonder what he thinks of the 2011 Rapture, the May 21st doomsday prediction, Harold Camping and all the rest. However, I already know where he stands on some this stuff, at least in part…
May 21st: Rapture 2011 Not A Joke For Some Christians
We find this all pretty damn hilarious (more here), but for some Christians, the idea of the May 21 Judgment Day (2011) and the Rapture in general is no laughing matter. My grandfather firmly believes there will be a Rapture, and that the “pure” will ascend to heaven to be with their god forevermore. The Rapture set for May 21st, 2011 hasn’t yet come to pass, even though it is currently May 22 in some parts of the world. Harold Camping, who has falsely predicted the end of the world before, is obviously a kook. Given what my grandfather believes, it would be easy for me to put him in the same category. However, he is my grandfather, and so even on the faux-Judgment Day, I will reserve my judgment, even though there isn’t a person or belief system on this earth my grandfather wouldn’t pass his own judgment on.
Whether or not my grandfather put any stock in the May 21st doomsday thing, and let’s hope he didn’t (but I’m honestly not willing to endure two hours of listening to him preach Seventh Day Adventist gospel to find out), he has told me some wild things in the past. If memory serves, he believes human souls are buried in the earth, waiting for Rapture. When we die, or when the Rapture comes (whichever comes first, I guess?), our souls ascend to heaven and we are transformed back into new bodies.

However, these are perfect, heavenly bodies, with no ailments, no sickness, no vulnerability and no threats. After the Rapture, we are reborn into eternal shells, and we are rejoined with our loved ones to be happy forever. All of that will take place if you are good enough. Most people, says my grandfather, are not good enough. (Such as the Chinese, for example, who “are all communists and who send their people over here [America] to serve as teachers or engineers, but they’re really spies for their country.” Did I mention my grandfather is horribly racist without even trying?)
I, for example, would not be good enough to ascend in the Rapture, so how lucky am I the May 21st doomsday rapture rumors are bunk? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a good person. I give to charity, I don’t litter, I pay my taxes and I do for others on a regular basis just because. However, I smoke, I drink (rarely), I curse, I lie. I’ve done some rather naughty things in my time. I’m a human being, and I commit what religious people might call “sin”. I am perfectly comfortable with that fact, but I don’t think my grandfather is.
