I’ll tell you, there’s hardly a more beautiful arrangement than a purse centerpiece – at least one that costs little money and is easy enough for the average person to do. And, might I add, one that doesn’t call for supplies you’ll never use again. A purse centerpiece can be made for any number of special occasions, from a wedding to a teen party to a shower.
One of the easiest purse centerpieces you can make is done by purchasing a purse from a thrift store or flea market. The best purse is one that will stand stiff, open wide at the top, and has handles. Set a potted plant in the purse or arrange some cut flowers in a squat vase. Or, just make a flower arrangement with silk flowers.
Some secondhand purses are out of style but still look good. These work great for celebrations with a vintage theme. Some old purses can be painted so that you can fit them in with any color scheme. There are any number of craft supplies you can use to doll up the purse, including paint markers, glitter, appliques or even adhesive jewels.
If you don’t have a purse you can use simply make a fake one from Styrofoam. Purchase a 10″ disk – larger or smaller, depending on the size you want – and cut it in half. You’ll find it much easier to cut it if you first cut an old candle with a serrated knife. The wax on the knife helps it flow smoothly through the Styrofoam.
Use one of the disk halves as a pattern to cut two pieces of scrapbook or other decorative paper. Glue one paper on each side of one of the disks. Cut additional paper pieces to be two inches wide; cut one long strip or tape strips together, end to end, to make a long piece. Glue this strip on the rounded side of the disk.
If you want, glue cord around the purse. Standing it on the flat side, add the cord, then choose flowers for it. Stick silk flowers into the rounded side of the Styrofoam. Use two metallic headbands as the handles for the purses. Just stick them into the Styrofoam, from the top, and allow them to be easily seen amongst the flowers.
The purse centerpiece doesn’t absolutely have to contain flowers. Fill it with tiny, stuffed animals for a baby shower by tying a ribbon around the animal’s neck (if it doesn’t already have one) and sliding a skewer under it. Secure the stick to the ribbon with a piece of tape.
If you use a real purse that’s new a teen will love this as a gift for her birthday. If you use the Styrofoam purse you can replace the flowers and change the look any time you want.
