Product Review: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

I don’t know how I ever got along without this magical little product. I always thought that eye shadow was just supposed to go on and if it ended up fading at the end of the day, oh well. A good eye shadow does tend to last a while, but even the best need a little help from time to time.

Urban Decay’s Eye Shadow Primer Potion was pretty much a godsend to all of us eye shadow enthusiasts. I had heard before of little tips and tricks that girls have used to keep their eye shadow on longer: use concealer on your eye lids, wipe a little contact lens solution on and let it dry… but I didn’t have a good concealer at the time and I wear glasses. What are girls like me supposed to do?

This magical little purple bottle of potion is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. When you open the bottle by unscrewing the cap, you’ll get a doe-foot wand (which has since been changed to a slanted doe-foot wand for ease of product distribution) with a little bit of a nude-colored liquid. Don’t be scared if this color doesn’t match your skintone! It’s made to work for all girls of every color under the sun.

You can apply this potion in a few different ways. The methods I’ve tried were applying the potion directly to my eyelid with the wand and rubbing it in with said wand (this didn’t turn out too well; I used way too much my first couple times and it took forever for the potion to dry); applying the potion in dots on my eyelid and rubbing it in with my fingertip (this has proved to be the best method for application for a lot of women), and finally, scraping the potion off the wand with my pinky and applying it to my eyelid (this method was okay but a lot of product ended up absorbing into the skin in my fingertip and not on my eyelid). Replace the wand in the bottle and allow the primer to dry as you ready your makeup routine.

Urban Decay promises no creasing and all-day wear when this primer is used under your normal eye shadow. They also promise that your eye shadow will appear more vibrant, as it actually has a sticky base to cling to, as opposed to just bare skin. For girls with oily eyelids, this product will definitely help your eye shadow stay stronger for longer.

Urban Decay has a few different colors of Primer Potion available, and I have been lucky enough to try all of them. Here is my take on these colors:

Original – the one that everyone fell in love with. This is a nude-peach color that goes on completely matte and sheer. No loss of color with this primer. Women of all skin tones can enjoy this primer with no worries.

Eden – this is a matte color that has more of a warm tone to it. I didn’t particularly like this Primer Potion, as it seemed to be a little too dark for my coloring. This would probably be better suited for older women or women that wear a lot of matte shadows (I like my shimmer!)

Sin – I love this little potion. It’s a shimmery champagne color, and one of Urban Decay’s most popular color trademarks. The reason I love this potion is that it can be used as a highlighter, too! It shows up a bit shimmery and helps to add a bit of shimmer to eye shadows that are a little on the matte side. This is a great buy if you’re a shimmer lover like me.

Greed – I was a little wary of this potion because gold tones do not work with my coloring at all. This is a bright shimmery gold color (which is why it was named Greed!) This turned out to be my favorite of the lot because it offers so much shimmer! It’s perfect for a highlighter and is probably the most pigmented of the bunch, although it’s still very sheer. Don’t be afraid of this one if you’re a cool-toned girl like myself.

Urban Decay Primer Potions are available at Ulta, Sephora, or Urban Decay’s website. These run for about $18 each, but don’t let the price tag fool you, these are worth their weight in gold!
