Those of us who write for a living know, or at least think we know, how crucial it is to be able to write in a concise, coherent manner. What we also know is that writing has evolved considerably with the rise of communication over the Internet. What was once considered standard writing protocol is now flexible, what was once considered unacceptable is now acceptable in certain circumstances. Today’s student is likely to spell before in text messaging language, “b4”, to deal with the reality of today’s communication. Twitter, with its mandated 140 characters and cell phones that require knowledge of thumb typing both do little to enhance a student’s writing skills. When it comes the term paper, instead of 140 characters, the student needs to write 140 sentences. In the past, a student would have to find someone to review and critique his or her work and often pay dearly for the service. Today students can simply visit Smarthinking.com (hereinafter referred to as Smarthinking). Smarthinking is an online service that allows the student to submit his or her work and have it reviewed by an online tutor.
A full explanation of the services Smarthinking provides can only be derived by reviewing their website; however, I do want to highlight some of their best options. Smart thinking offers an Online Writing Lab where students can submit any written assignment, including resumes, for review. For essays and other written works under 10 pages, the cost of the service is $19.95. For essays and other written work over 10 pages, the cost of the service is $34.95.
Smart thinking also offers SAT essay review that includes not only the critique, but a suggested score for a remarkably reasonable $9.95. Throughout the site, Smartthinking is clear about the fact that they are not editing or writing any part of the student’s assignment. Their purpose is to educate, not rewrite. This commitment is what makes this service a excellent buy.
For the student looking for live tutoring, Smarthinking offers on-demand tutoring at either $35 an hour, or $120 for a four-hour block. The student is either able to see the schedule of available tutoring sessions or schedule a session with an instructor. What makes this an attractive option is that Smarthinking does not require students to have any technology other than their personal computing device. Sample tutorials are available on Smarthinking’s website to view the process by which they provide live tutoring in Nursing, Mathematics and Spanish.
All in all, their service is designed to provide real help for those who need it when they need it. For those who find themselves an emergency, (like your college students with three papers due the same week) or your long-term planners, (like your college student who looks at the syllabus and recognizes they will have three papers due the same week) Smarthinking is right for your online writing critiquing needs. For providing a truly valuable resource, Smarthinking gets five out of five stars.
