My hair hasn’t been the fussiest; I’ve been pretty lucky on that account. I’ve mostly just been using 3-in-1 shampoos or whatever I usually get for free when I stay in a hotel as shampoo and my hair hasn’t really complained. My hair isn’t too dry or too oily (except when I let it go for a few days), but lately, I’ve been noticing my hair has been kinda dull and limp.
I’ve recently been growing my hair out and my usual routine just doesn’t cut it. I decided that maybe it’s time to try something new, and I was told by my best friend that LUSH’s Big shampoo is incredibly awesome. With such a glowing review, I just had to try it.
I went to my local LUSH store and asked for a sample of this lovely shampoo. I got a little pot filled with chunky white goo. It didn’t look like any shampoo that I had ever used before. Upon closer inspection, I found that these chunks were chunks of pure sea salt. Big is comprised of almost 50% sea salt, which helps to clean your hair and give it lift (I’ve never been to the ocean but I’ve heard about what wonders the “salt water air” can do for your skin and hair!) I was excited to try this shampoo out.
Because Big is full of chunks of sea salt, you can bet that this shampoo isn’t good for just blobbing on your head and rubbing around. What you do is you take a scoop of Big (I usually use two fingertips’ worth) and place it in your hand. Get it wet in the shower with warm water and start to rub it between your palms. Soon, you’ll notice that the salt is starting to dissolve. After keeping this up for awhile, you’ll notice that you’ve got a lather going. Now is the time for you to blob it on your head! Work it in the roots first really well, this is going to help give you lift. Then work it down to your ends. Get it in there really good. I know it feels like it isn’t really doing much, but you’ll know that it worked once you do the “squeaky clean” test after you rinse it out.
I suggest using a conditioner afterward, just because you probably tangled your mop up really well getting all that Big incorporated into each strand. I use Veganese (which smells like lemon and lavender, and doesn’t have parabens or anything artificial to weigh your hair down).
Big smells like nothing, really, when you first open the pot. Just smells like salt… sort of. When you get it wet in the shower, it starts to smell really fresh and flowery, but not heady. Just really clean and fresh. It’s remarkable, and it’s great for getting you up in the morning.
This left my hair INCREDIBLY clean. I’m talking clean like I couldn’t feel oil on my hair for days. This is unheard of! The effects lasted two days for me before I had to shampoo again. This is par for the course for me, as I can usually stretch it about three days before I have to shampoo my hair. This also did provide a lot of lift. I didn’t notice it until the third day when I noticed how flat my hair looked compared to the previous two days. Gotta love it!
