Product Review: DermaNew Facial Rejuvenation System

by mud mosh

As I get older, I’m noticing that my skin is getting more dull and I’m experiencing more breakouts that I ever have before. Generally, I have great skin but lately I’ve just been bummed whenever I look at myself in the mirror. Something was missing.

I like getting facials but with a wedding coming up, I can’t really afford to get them as often as I’d like. I’d researched products and potions that are meant to give dull, lifeless skin a little pick-me-up, but again, price was a factor. What the heck! I was getting close to the end of my rope and about to say “screw it” to the whole thing.

I was on YouTube one day, looking at skincare videos, when I came across a video of a girl explaining how much she loved her new skincare system. I was intrigued, especially when she said it was a cheaper alternative to the Clarisonic. For those of you that don’t know, the Clarisonic is a beloved-by-many skincare system that runs about… oh… in the $200 range. Yikes. The lovely lady in the YouTube video told me that this DermaNew system costs a fraction of that amount, about $70. Muuuuuuch better.

I researched it more online and found a great deal on the DermaNew for $50 or so on Amazon. I purchased the “sensitive skin” formula (there was another formula for acne-prone skin and I would definitely not classify myself as acne-prone… accident-prone maybe, but that’s something else entirely). I clicked the button to buy it and waited patiently for my new goodies to arrive in the mail.

When I received in the mail was the standard DermaNew Facial Rejuvenation System: the “wand” (which looks like a judge’s gavel), a teardrop-shaped sponge applicator, a teardrop-shaped brush, a larger teardrop-shaped sponge applicator, batteries, and a stand. I also received a tube of special microdermabrasion cream.

The instructions say to first clean your face with the teardrop-shaped brush. Then apply the dermabrasion cream to your clean, dry face and use the teardrop-shaped sponge applicator to rub the cream around your face and gently exfoliate all the dead skin cells. Rinse clean and apply moisturizer of your choice. Seems simple enough.

The wand itself is waterproof (which is a plus, especially if you use it in the shower or end up accidentally dropping it in the sink during your skin cleansing… just sayin’). The wand has two sides: low and high. The low side is for those with more sensitive skin and the high side is for those that want to put the spurs to their cleansing routine. The wand has a push button that has a 2-minute timer and then shuts off. Press the button again to bypass the timer. Press the button once more to turn the unit off.

The DermaNew suggests using their special brand of facial cleaner, but I used regular old Neutrogena. Their Pore-Refining cleanser is perfect to use with this system. I wet the brush, attached it to the wand on high, and applied a big dollop of my cleanser. I turned on the wand and cleansed away.

The brush is a little on the rough side, but it does a very good job at cleaning my skin. The two minute timer is perfect. Anything more and I would have rubbed my face raw. You can really feel a good, deep clean with this system. After the two minutes was up, I rinsed off my face and the brush and dried myself with a towel. I then readied myself for my eminent scrubbing.

The DermaNew brand of microdermabrasion cream is actually very nice. It has a pleasant smell (not flowery or perfume-y, it just smells clean) but I found that I did need quite a bit of cream to get a really good scrub going. It says to wet the teardrop sponge applicator, dot the cream on your face, and turn the unit on.

I found that this wand did an excellent job of scrubbing my skin, too! I do not recommend the high setting for scrubbing. It is just too abrasive. The instructions suggest to scrub your face in upward circular motions for two minutes. When the timer goes off, rinse the teardrop sponge applicator and wipe your face clean with a wet cloth or splash water on your face until the scrub comes off.

After you’ve removed all of the scrub, apply your favorite moisturizer. Wait for the moisturizer to sink in, and then revel in how baby-butt-smooth your face feels. Make your significant other touch your face and comment on its smoothness, as well.

After using this system for a few weeks, I’ve noticed that my skin looks and feels more healthy. It could be described as “radiant” from time to time, as well. I’ve also noticed that my little cluster break-outs are less frequent, which is always a plus.

I’ve also found that using Clinique 7-Day Scrub Cream produces equal results as when I use the DermaNew brand microdermabrasion cream. Your mileage may vary.

You can purchase a DermaNew at BeautyChoice.com, Amazon, or even eBay. If you’re looking for a good skincare system that won’t break the bank, you might want to give DermaNew a try!
