J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore website inspired more mystery than anything at Hogwarts. But once the purpose of the site was finally revealed Thursday, fans realized that the website would indeed live up to its title. There doesn’t seem to be any more of Harry Potter that can be exposed, yet Rowling is set on finding a way.
When the site officially launches in October, it will offer the entire Harry Potter novel series in e-book form for the first time. Of course, billions of Muggles have already read the books on paper, but the next generation of fanatics won’t have to go to that much trouble.
In addition, Pottermore will offer “social networking elements with an immersive game-like world,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Rowling also teased in a YouTube message that she would reveal “additional information” about the seven novels that she had “been hoarding for years.”
Even though the books ended a few years ago and the movie series is set to close next month, there is still the highest demand possible for more Harry Potter. What’s more, it seems that Rowling created such a detailed world she has more than enough deleted material to hand out for a while.
As such, when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 comes out in theaters, it will hardly be the last big Potter project ever, as some might assume. In fact, as long as Rowling is alive, there will be demand and pressure for more material on the series, and even more full-length Potter books.
Other authors might balk at not being able to get away from their signature franchise, and become frustrated that they can’t do anything else. However, since Rowling’s signature franchise is a billion-dollar empire and has turned her into the most famous author in the world she seems to hardly be sick of it yet.
Unlike so many other book and movie series that decline before long, the Harry Potter series have kept enchanting the world without a speed bump through seven stories. Therefore, few will complain that the franchise needs to slow down now, even though it is technically over.
For those fans, Rowling said she created Pottermore as a “give-back.” As such, they will likely break all e-book downloading records when the novels hit the Internet, when they’re not navigating the site’s other features.
To register for early entry into the site, fans can “follow the owl” to take a special challenge from Rowling starting July 31. The first million to complete it will get an early look at the page, while the rest of Mugglekind will have a few more months to wait around. But they can always pass the time by re-reading the books in their original novel form or seeing Deathly Hallows Part 2 a few more times in theaters.
