On (April 4, 2011) we all found out that The Rock and John Cena will face each other at WrestleMania 28. Immediately after The Rock proposed the idea to John Cena, you could hear some fans booing on Monday Night Raw. I even heard a fan yell “go back to your movies!” However, many fans are happy that the match will not occur until next year. Despite the mixed reactions, here are possible reasons why I think the match is scheduled for next year.
1. WWE wants everyone to have the same anticipation for the “WrestleMania PPV” just like the SuperBowl, NBA Finals, and the World Series. How do you create anticipation? You do that by scheduling a huge main event in a year in advance involving the most popular wrestlers from different eras. Despite the match being scheduled in year in advance, this match is something many people have waited for years to see. Don’t forget that WrestleMania 28 will take place in The Rock’s hometown. Many people are already choosing which wrestler will win the match.
2. The second reason why I think the match was scheduled for WrestleMania 28 in 2012 is The Rock’s schedule. We knew that “The Great One” was going to have to take some time off from WWE at one point. He has to promote the “Fast Five” movie and is scheduled to appear in many more movies this year. Despite the movie schedule, expect him to make sporadic appearances throughout 2011 and 2012. His schedule may become very similar to 2001-2003 when he first kicked his movie career into high gear. Nonetheless, The Rock has kept his promise of not leaving the WWE whether you like it or not.
3. Remember when The Rock feuded with Hulk Hogan back in 2002 and 2003? First he defeated Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 18 in an Icon vs. Icon Match (beat him fair and square). The second time, The Rock defeated Hulk Hogan at No Way Out in 2003, but needed assistance to win because he was a heel. Whether you guys want to admit it or not, these matches served as Hogan passing the torch to The Rock. The Rock was and still is the biggest draw in the WWE since Hulk Hogan, and WWE fulfilled the fans dreams by having the two face each other at WrestleMania 18. Notice how Hulk Hogan lost each time to The Rock on PPV. Hulk Hogan made his departure from the WWE in the early 90’s. In the late 90’s The Rock eventually emerged as the biggest draw since Hulk Hogan, and it was only right for The Rock to win those matches. Fast-forward to present concerning The Rock and John Cena. The Rock has made his return to the WWE, and has been gone for 7 years. In those seven years John Cena has become the face of the WWE. Just imagine when the two will finally square off at WrestleMania 28 in 2012. The match will be legendary, and remember for the past several years John Cena has been Vince McMahon’s largest investment. John Cena’s legacy will become greater after he faces The Rock at WrestleMania 28.
