Pepsi Throwback is one of those things that really, none of us saw coming.
Sure Pepsi was always better than Coke and sure Pepsi from a fountain drink did have a slightly sweeter taste than say a Pepsi in a 20 oz bottle. Sometimes if you drink Pepsi from a can it tastes better than a Pepsi from a 2L bottle. But this Pepsi Throwback is a revolution.
First here, then gone, now here what looks like for good, fans of sugar love the flavor and can’t get enough. But have you even tried this stuff yet? Is there really a difference in taste? Isn’t High Fructose Corn Syrup basically the same taste?
Pepsi Throwback uses sugar. That’s basically the only difference. If you go to Pepsi Product Facts and look up the differences in ingredients, here is what you will find:
“Pepsi: Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, sugar, phosphoric acid, caffeine, natural flavor.
Pepsi Throwback: Carbonated water, sugar, caramel color, sugar, phosphoric acid, caffeine, natural flavor.”
So with Pepsi Throwback there is no citric acid and no high fructose corn syrup. That’s the only difference. And of course the sugar moves up ahead of caramel color to be the second most prominent ingredient.
Is there really a difference in taste, though? My wife was convinced I was making this whole “Pepsi Throwback taste sensation” thing up. So we did what any soft drink would have done in the 1970’s and 1980’s. We did a blind taste test to see if she could tell the difference. My wife entered into this never having tasted Throwback Pepsi calling my affliction “crack-Pepsi.” Today she feels the same as I do that the taste difference is noticeable and real.
Still, in so many parts of the country we’ve been to recently; they either have had Pepsi Throwback and have pulled it or they’ve never had it at all. Those who don’t carry Pepsi Throwback, like one gas station/convenience store in the Panhandle of Florida have told me that they once carried it, but they don’t anymore. When I asked why the attendant told me “no one was buying it.”
If this is really the case and people just aren’t buying it because they haven’t given the Pepsi Throwback a try or they don’t think they would like it, I’d implore them to consider again.
There are not too many things I’m “addicted” to and I don’t even think Pepsi Throwback falls into that category. But when I look at a soda case with regular Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Cherry Pepsi, and newer options like Pepsi Max and I don’t see any Pepsi Throwback; my appetite for soda immediately spoils. I’d rather keep looking than settle for anything less.
