As a self-employed individual, I spend most of my days in my home office working from my very well used computer. As this computer is my most used office tool, I am constantly looking for ways to keep it, as well as myself, better organized. Throughout the 10 years that I have been virtually attached to one laptop or another, I have discovered some very good programs designed to better organize myself, as well as my computer.
Sticky Notes are by far my biggest tool. As a program that came on my most recent laptop with Windows 7, this program is probably the one that keeps me the most organized and on track. Just like the little pieces of yellow paper we are all familiar with; sticky notes are exactly the same on the computer. You are able to create an unlimited amount and they can be used for anything.
I use my sticky notes as a way to show and track my daily progress on projects. In the evening, I will create a sticky note for each project I need to accomplish on the following day. As they are boldly displayed on my desktop, it is hard to miss them. I start with the first sticky note, and as each one is completed, it is deleted. The goal being that throughout my workday, I will have created a sticky note free desktop and have accomplished all the work needed to be done that day.
For times when I am on the go, I also have this program on my cell phone, so I am able to create a sticky note to refer to later. For those without Sticky Notes already on their computer, it is available to download through cnet.
For those of us with a desktop full of icons from everything like programs, documents, and photos, finding what you are looking for on your desktop at any given time can become difficult and time consuming. To solve this problem, I found a program called Fences which creates colored windows on your desktop. These windows can be custom titled and arranged in any way on your computer desktop.
These windows can then be used to organize all the desktop icons. For example, you could create a program window where all your desktop programs can be placed, a documents window for all those Word and pdf files, and maybe a photo window with your editing programs and image icons inside.
This program is a wonderful way to reduce your desktop clutter and save time finding the information you need.
Evernote, a program with the logo of an elephant head, is a program designed to help you remember everything and keep it all in a centralized and searchable location. It enables you to take text notes, clip web pages, add photos from either online or your phone, capture screen shots and more, all while keeping them in a location which can be organized and is automatically made searchable for keywords. It enables you to create different organizational folders, so certain topics can be grouped together. I have this installed on both my computer and as an application on my cell phone, so I am able to access my Evernote information no matter where I am. I am able to add new information on the go or recall information I may need to share with someone else.
There are numerous organizational tools available to do just about everything, though I have found these three programs to be very effective in keeping me organized and aiding in my productivity. The bonus is that each one of these programs is free and downloadable today, so you have no excuse for not getting organized.
