President Obama spoke to gay supporters at an LGBT fundraiser in New York. Negotiations in Albany over whether New York should allow civil unions for gay couples has been fierce at times and has produced national speculation over whether the president is for, or against gay marriage.
Erica Werner writes at newser:
Gay activists view the Obama administration as slow to take up their issues. But the president won over many by repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the military and by instructing the Justice Department to stop defending in court a federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
However, Obama has disappointed gay supporters by endorsing civil unions but not marriages.
If you want to see someone who is livid over President Obama’s constant wavering about rights for gay marriages, civil unions, and gays in the military, watch this clip of Lawrence O’Donnell’s interview with Lt. Dan Choi. Choi was kicked out of the military for admitting he was gay, and has been on the warpath ever since, demanding equal rights for all American citizens; especially those who have risked their lives for this country.
The window of opportunity for Obama to regain rapport with his youthful followers is rapidly diminishing. The gay rights movement, which has really become a surging wave, will leave Obama tumbling helplessly in its wake if he does not quickly become a firm supporter of the cause. Obama has a unique chance to ride that wave, as well, but he’d better get on his board and get firm footing to ride it home.
And that would mean a statement of unwavering, unambiguous support for gay marriage. No queer statements about people deserving equal rights, BUT…dah da, dah da, dah da. And roll the excuses why there won’t be full support from the president.
I received a letter today from a friend (an ex-Hollywood stripper, Sugar Rogers ) and in that letter she writes: “Dear Adam Michael Luebke, I apologize for the insane scene in my trailer earlier this year. I drugged you, you escaped, I never had a chance to explain. I was in love. I was confused. Either way, I’m a lesbian now, so you have nothing to worry about. Let’s hang out. Let’s talk about the world. And the Word. And let’s hope this president gets on his horse and rides it into gay town. Otherwise he’s going to get chewed up and spit out and remembered for being yet another fake liberal. At least Anthony Weiner wasn’t afraid of supporting same sex marriage .
