The last few months, I haven’t heard one person talk about the wonders of Twilight. More and more people are losing interest in the sanitized modern vampire, maybe due to angelic sparkly vampires and whiny girlie girls. Don’t you think that vampires need a little bad boy in them, and the heroines need a fearless never give up attitude. I did hear a few fans mention that they are happy about the new season of True Blood. Maybe because Sookie isn’t simpering in the corner of Merlottes saying, “Please Bill come and protect me”. She’s protecting her friends and family from the blood suckers. But still, maybe this lack of excitement means the mainstream vampire craze is nearing its end. So what supernatural fairy tale being will catch the imagination next?
I heard someone swear up and down that mermaids are the next obsession. The Pirates of Caribbean: On Stranger Tides movie, started in theaters May 20 , 2011, show us a fierce version of mermaids. Killer mermaids, more females that kick hiney. Will these fierce mermaids catch our imaginations?
Wizards and Witches
Harry Potter Wizards were a big buzz a few years ago with the final movie released this year. But, imagine a sexy bad boy Viking wizard like Eric Northman from True Blood. I don’t see any wizard movies for an adult audience in the near future, but it is a fun idea.
When it comes to witches, Kelley Armstrong’sOtherworld series has entertaining witches. Armstrong’s witches break the rules, saving the world from supernatural evils and corrupt corporate executives. I can envision a darker, less perky version of the TV show Charmed.
Magic and Elves go together and a perfect example is The Lord of the Rings movies. Will the summer movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (release 2012), bring the sexy elf back into fashion? The Hobbit: There and Back Again follows in 2013, so just maybe we will see a slew of high budget movies that follow with Orlando Bloom or sexy Feimo like elves. The popular Lauren Hamilton or Patricia Briggs book can be turned into great movies. They will have to bring a TV version of Lauren Hamilton’s down to a rated R, but hey, what private investigator wouldn’t want to be an Elfling princess with an entourage of drop-dead gorgeous elves at her beck and call.
Zombies never seem to completely leave the mainstream. Consider that the symbolism of the zombie may reach into our souls speaking to us at the deepest level. I mean how many days a month do you wake up in the morning feeling like the walking dead. The Walking Dead may just be the beginning of a new type of zombie shows that focus on the relationships between the living. The Zombies are an excuse to put characters in an exciting and dangerous situation; otherwise, we’re just watching Desperate Housewives.
Of course, with the latest version of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) bringing women to the box office, speculation might be useless. Thor may just strip the sexy supernatural beings out of our minds. I can see it now; a gentleman impresses his new girlfriend by buying tickets to a romantic comedy. At the theater his girlfriend gives an unrepentant squeal of joy because the latest Thor movie is showing.
All of these creatures always have a solid cult following. However, creating mainstream versions takes a special movie, book, or TV shows. So Hollywood, we are waiting for the next big thing, impress us.
