Take four women who are comedians, national touring on top of that, all of them moms (either through birth, marriage, or adoption) and get them together and you have the Mom Squad Comedy Tour. The Mom Squad consists of comediennes Jenifer Rawlings, Wendy Liebman, Amy Anderson, and Judy Gold. All four of these beautiful women have many years of experience and have appeared on multiple tv shows, films and stage shows. Each of the comedians tour together and do their own solo gigs. Wendy Liebman and Judy Gold each have over 20 years experience on stage. This weekend the tour stops in the Twin Cities area at the Joke Joint Comedy Club in Lilydale.
Wendy Liebman has been performing for 25 years and has opened for Bob Hope, Ray Charles, Ann- Margaret, Kenny Loggins, The Smothers Brothers, and Jerry Seinfeld are among the many she has opened for. She has also appeared on The Tonight Show both with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Joy Behar Show, and has hosted a few shows. She once even filled in for Greg Kinnear when he hosted Later on NBC. The Mom Squad was started by Jennifer Rawlings and Liebman said, “Jennifer approached me and I joined the tour then we added Amy (Anderson) and then Judy (Gold). Performing in Kansas, Massachusetts and here (Twin Cities area) are our highlights “
Three of the comedians live in Los Angeles (Anderson, Liebman, and Rawlings) while Judy Gold, who was performing her first Mom Squad show, lives in New York. This stop on the tour was a homecoming for Amy Anderson. Anderson is from Excelsior and said of the stop, “I always love coming to Minnesota. A lot of my family and friends are still here. It’s great for them to come see me work. It would be nice to see my Minnetonka peeps here. Go Skippers! The Mom Squad is fun”
The show starts with Jennifer Rawlings doing her act and she is the emcee of the show. Rawlings has appeared on Comedy Central, PBS, and CMT as well as the late night talk shows and entertaining the troiops. She was commenting about the weather and how we in Minnesota often have to layer our clothing because of the weather she said that she layered too, she was wearing four thongs. Rawlings then turns the show over to Anderson. Amy Anderson is the mother of a toddler and is the single mom of the group. She makes good use of being a “new” mom in her act and how people in Hollywood act towards people who have kids. She also has the audience gasping and laughing and how some places she has performed where the people took her a little too seriously. Her set is very funny and at the first glance most of the audience are taken aback at someone who does not look like your average Minnesotan. Anderson was born in South Korea and was adopted and raised by a local Swedish family. She uses family in her humor and leaves her audience laughing long and hard. She then turns the stage back to Rawlings who will keep the laughs rolling as she introduces Wendy Liebman. Liebman has a unique act. She uses quick follow ups to her jokes. An example is “Last Thanksgiving I made a 26 lb. turkey…pot pie.” She also uses double entendre. Liebman is the stepmother of two teen age boys and she will talk about how that can be awkward. She mentioned how her sons say she’s a M.I.L.K., a mom I’d like to kill. She will also talk about her past relationships and how they ended. She then turns things back over to Jennifer who keeps the audience laughing and then it’s time for Judy Gold. Judy Gold has appeared on HBO and can be seen on TruTVs program “World’s Dumbest”. Gold is a mother of two sons and a lesbian, She will make good use of those two situations and she also adds in the fact that she is also Jewish. Her brash and fast paced delivery keeps a crowd already rolling after the previous acts to lose control. One of her sons is now a teenager and she will talk about how frustrating it is especially living in a New York apartment with one bathroom. She also will make you laugh at how she is approached by the parents of her sons’ friends and how the comments they make about her being a lesbian. The Twin Cities Thursday night show was Gold’s first performance as a member of the Mom Squad. After Gold finishes her act, all four comedians come back on stage and answer questions from the crowd in their own special and funny way. In all, the Mom Squad is a great show to see and all four comediennes are among the best in comedy. If you need a good laugh this is a great place to get that laugh.
