Memorial Day Celebrations in New York: Memorial Day Events 2011

Whether you are interested in going to a parade, the beach, or a museum this Memorial Day, New York has an event for you. According to, Memorial Day-originally named Decoration Day-was proclaimed by General John Logan as a day for the United States to remember its fallen heroes. It was first officially observed on May 30, 1868. New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day as a holiday in 1873. Therefore, it is only fitting that New Yorkers would continue the long tradition of remembering the men and women who died in service to our country.

Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum

Celebrate Fleet Week 2011 (May 25th – 30th) at the Intrepid. Located at Pier 86 on W. 46th Street & 12th Avenue in Manhattan, the Intrepid has many activities scheduled for children of all ages. Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Located at The Tisch Building at 212 W. 83rd Street in Manhattan, the Children’s Museum will have Memorial Day activities throughout the day. There will be mural wall painting, arts & crafts, and visits from members of the military. The museum is open Tuesdays – Sundays, 10am – 5pm. Memorial Day Special: Memorial Walk

On Monday, May 30, 2011, from 11am-1pm, take a free tour through Central Park in remembrance of New York’s veterans. The tour will depart from the Maine Monument at Columbus Circle. Visit Central Park, for additional information and directions.

The Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade

Attend the 144th Annual Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade on May 30, 2011 at 11am. The parade starts at 91st Street and 3rd Avenue and makes its way over to John Paul Jones Park. Visit Brooklyn Memorial Day for additional details.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach State Park

If you are interested in celebrating Memorial Day at the beach, go to Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, New York to see the U.S. Air Force air show. The air show, featuring a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor and A-10 Thunderbolt II, will be held from 10am-3pm on May 28 & 29, 2011. Be sure to check Jones Beach Air for schedule changes.
