Mark Henry has recently announced in a interview that he plans to retire from wrestling within the next 18 months. He also said in the interview that he has three years left of wrestling in him, but he will retire within the next 18 months. Mark Henry is a underrated wrestling in the WWE, and the creative department should have plans to give him one more push to win the US title, the Intercontinental Championship, or the tag titles for the first time ever in his career. More than likely my suggestions will not occur because the creative department has plans of their own.
Mark Henry has been in the WWE since 1996, and has only won the European Championship and the ECW Championship each one time (defunct titles). Technically, he didn’t win the European Championship. Jeff Jarrett awarded him the belt for defeating D’lo Brown in a match at Summerslam in 1999. He reigned as the European Champion for a mere 34 days. His other title reign I mentioned earlier was as the ECW Champion. When this title still used by the WWE, WWE used to act this belt was equivalent to the World Heavyweight Championship, and the WWE title. The ECW titles in my opinion, was a mid-carder’s World Championship, and looks at the stats and see how many times it switched hands.
A majority of the WWE Universe knew that the belt had the least value, and that’s why Mark Henry won the title. Christian, a wrestler who everyone thinks who should have won the WWE or World Title a long time ago held the ECW title for 205 days. That was the longest ECW title reign after ECW was brought back to television. Excluding Jack Swagger and CM Punk, (Who Became World Champions eventually) the ECW title was used for the sole purpose of awarding guys like Mark Henry and Christian a title that has no value. The creative department does not want to ever award Mark Henry a major title, so instead give him the ECW title that no one respects. Sadly, the same can be said for Christian. Mark Henry only spent 70 days as the ECW champion, what a shame.
Outside his reign as the ECW champion, Mark Henry hasn’t really accomplished anything in the WWE. I always hear many people say “I like him when he had that Sexual Chocolate persona.” I’m sorry that persona was humorous, but it’s irrelevant when you really look at the situation. Think about it, a 400 pound man pretending to be a ladies man and pursue 70 year old women (Mae Young). How the hell does that add on to his legacy? He has been a jobber in the WWE nearly his entire career. Remember that he used to compete in the Olympics and was not dubbed “World Strongest Man” for any reason. He was successful in the Olympics in weightlifting, and won a gold medal at the now defunct “Pan American Games.” Mark Henry has been disrespected by the creative department his entire career and deserves one more decent push to win a meaningless title before he retires.
