The practice of honoring our nation’s fallen military began unofficially in 1865, with the practice of decorating soldiers’ graves. May 30, 1869, was the first official observance of what was called “Decoration Day.” The name changed to “Memorial Day” in 1882, but did not become the official name until 1967.
Today, cities and towns throughout the United States continue to honor those who sacrificed their lives in our country’s wars in ceremonies and cemetery visits. These ceremonies often include drills by local high school Junior ROTCs and Color Guards, music, 21-gun salutes, and speeches by local government officials and visiting dignitaries.
