We have arrived at the Vishuddha (vee-shoot-ah) Chock-Ra, this Sanskrit word means ‘to purify’. Only by successfully working through the first 4 Chakras can we reach the purification necessary to open the Throat Chakra. The 5th Chakra focuses on communication and self-expression, this is where you learn you have a voice and a choice.
The Vee-shoot-ah is governed by the thyroid and is related to the throat, arms, neck, ears, nose and teeth. Ether is the element and the sense is hearing, the need to listen and to be heard are crucial as you work through your life lessons. When this Chock-Ra is out of balance you may experience a stiff neck, colds, asthma, throat, thyroid and hearing problems.
When blocked there is the proverbial lump in your throat and all communication is muffled. You have problems getting your thoughts out, your voice heard and may even struggle with expressing yourself through writing. You are the silent child who hides in pain and disappears in the crowd. You suppress your creativity and self-expression in fear of failure. You have trouble using the word ‘no’ and quite often get stuck doing things you would rather not do. All the while tension is building inside as your voice struggles to be worthy of speaking.
On the flip side, when your Vee-shoot-ah Chock-Ra is spiraling too fast you’re very talkative and have no time to listen. You may become arrogant, interruptive, self-righteous and filled with dogmatic ideals. Without the patience to participate in the fine art of conversation you miss important details and valuable lessons.
To find balance you must be open to listen, learn and share. Athena, the warrior goddess of wisdom, is a perfect example of a communicator. She uses her wits and wisdom instead of her weapons for battle and for protection. She usually travels with an owl and is known for her grace and creativity. Athena can teach you about self-expression with both your spoken and written words. This goddess walks proud with her head held high listening and learning, paying close attention to the details. She speaks only the truth in a loving and direct manner. Call on Athena, she is more than willing to help you.
Singing, chanting, repeating mantras and journaling are all wonderful ways to balance your Vishuddha Chakra. Sometimes you need to write a letter, it is not important that you send it, you just need to release your feelings. Meditating will open blocks and calm overactive Chakras. When you quiet your mind you make room for your truth to come in. Breathing exercises and working with your prana breath is very clearing for your Throat Chakra. Camel Pose, Shoulder Stand and Legs Up Wall Pose are all brilliant yoga postures to purify your Vee-shoot-ah. Fruits, particularly blue colored berries, will soothe your throat and nourish this Chakra. The crystal kingdom is rich with light blue stones to balance this spinning vortex; Blue Lace Agate, Turquoise and (my personal favorite) Aqua Aura are all recommended and would be very helpful when worn on a necklace. You have a beautiful voice, use it gracefully to express yourself.
