When one searches the content of the Bible it is no surprise it has stood the test of time. This courageous book is filled with many treasures of wisdom on how to deal with all of life’s circumstances. Many rely on these words for inspiration and encouragement in time of need. When I’m faced with challenges or in need of guidance, the Bible is my place of refuge. Hopefully, sharing just a few of the many passages I’ve cherished over the years will help in your difficult times.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you will find rest unto your souls. (AKJV)
Jesus lets us know in this scripture that when we leave our cares and worries with Him, He gives us rest. In the second part of this passage Jesus tells us to take His yoke. A yoke is a wood harness used in farming to keep two animals together to pull heavy loads. Similarly, at times we may carry the weight of heart ache, worry, depression or thoughts of despair, on our shoulders, when life loads us with undesirable burdens. We should let go of these heavy yokes, trust in Him to take care of us, and accept His yoke of rest for our souls. Whenever I feel weighed down or overwhelmed by the pressures of life, I remember these verses and find rest.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (AKJV)
This scripture tells us no matter what we’re faced with in life we can trust that God has a plan for us and has a good reason for allowing all circumstances, whether good or bad, to take place in our lives. Sometimes if I am going through a tough season I just want it to end, but I have to remember that God is in control and trust He has a good reason for allow each situation to take place in my life. This verse reminds me even though I may not understand the reason for every negative situation that occurs, God’s wisdom is infinite and He knows what is best for me.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves it is a gift of God: not of works, lest any man boast. (AKJV)
When we put our faith in Christ we receive salvation by His grace and not by doing good deeds. This doesn’t mean we don’t need to practice doing good deeds, but it lets us know that we can’t earn salvation from our works. There were times when I’ve made wrong decisions and I would bury myself in guilt for days, even after asking God’s forgiveness and changing my direction. I felt that I had fallen from God’s grace. This passage has helped me to really understand we only receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and not the good we do. How inspirational it is to know that God’s salvation to those who believe in Him is purely by His grace.
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (AKJV)
This means we should humble ourselves by doing what God desires us to do. The decisions we make should first be based on what God’s will is for us. When He is first place in the decisions we make He exalts and blesses us. There are certain occasions when it seems easier or more convenient to do things my way as opposed to obeying God. I’ve learned God wants us to obey Him because He cares about us and wants to bless us. Meditating on this passage helps me to stay humble even when I want to do things my way.
1 Peter 4:8
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins . (AKJV)
Having charity in our lives will help us to avoid committing sin or offending each other. When we focus on being compassionate to one another we are promoting peace in our lives and the lives of those around us. Sometimes I get so caught up in all the obligations I have to meet and become less sensitive to the needs of others. This scripture helps me to remember that I am planting good seed and eliminating the negative effects of sin when I show charity.
No matter what the challenge is in your life the Bible is filled with inspiration to help you overcome. There are many more verses that helped me through trying times. Meditating on these scriptures has given me strength throughout the years. Call to mind a verse you hold close to your heart and maybe you can inspire someone too.
