All parents want their children to make good choices and be responsible but what some parents don’t understand is that children understand what it means to be responsible on their own. Children need help learning how to be responsible and how responsibility will help them throughout their life and as a parent, it’s your job to help them.
First you need to understand that when it comes to teaching your children about responsibility, there is a lot more to it then just making sure they clean up their bedroom and help you do the dishes. It’s about teaching children that you can’t always be there to make sure they have everything they need and they do what they are supposed to.
Are you setting a good example? You need to make sure that you are showing your children the behavior you’d like them to have. You can’t tell them to be responsible but then you forget to do something that you said you would do. Be sure that you are doing everything you say you’ll do, you’re showing up on time to places and you keep your promises. If your child sees you being responsible, they will understand it more and know that you aren’t just telling them what to do, you do it too so that must mean it’s right.
Here are some ways that you can show your child you are responsible:
-Always be on time to pick them up or drop them off somewhere.
-Keep track of where you place things.
-Stay within your budget each month.
-Don’t drink or smoke.
-Get to work on time everyday.
-Get your assignments and projects for work done on time.
Who is your child hanging around with? You want to help your child understand that they should friends who are kind and responsible themselves. If you allow your child to hang out with just anyone, they may choose to hang around children that are bad examples and show your children that responsibility is no big deal. Meet all of your child’s friends and make sure that they are good friends for your child.
Set rules. It’s very important that you set rules for your child to follow, and always have consequences to the rules if they are broken. Show them that there are consequences to not being responsible.
Don’t always bail them out. If they forget their backpack, lunch or homework at home.. Don’t take it to them at school. This will show them that even if they are irresponsible and forget stuff, you’ll always be there to make it better for them.
