Being a single parent comes with many challenges but if you join or participate in a support group for single parents you can learn a lot from others and it can benefit you in many ways. When it comes to looking for a support group in your area, you may not be able to find everything you are looking for a support group.
If you’ve joined support group after support group and you can’t find what you are looking for than maybe you should consider starting a support group for single parents yourself. You may think that this is too difficult to do, but you’d be surprised at how simple it can be. Here are some tips that will help you start your own single parent support group.
Where to hold the meetings.
The most difficult part about starting your own support group is finding people to join, but with the right tools this can be easy. So, to start off you need to make sure that you have a good location to hold your meetings. If you have a large home, than your living room or dining room will do just fine but if you live in an apartment that is smaller, than you may want to consider renting a place once a week or asking a friend or family member if you can borrow their living room once a week.
When to hold the meetings.
Once you find a location to hold your meetings, you need to figure out what day you want to hold your meetings. It doesn’t have to be every week, it can be once every other week or even once a month. But you should have it on the same day every week or month, this way it’s easier to remember. After you choose the day than you can start thinking about the time you would like to hold your meeting. It’s best to hold them in the evening, this way people can come after work. Single parents don’t have a lot of time, so you probably shouldn’t make the meetings very long. Maybe an hour or so is what’s best.
Now it’s time to start letting people know about your support group. You can do this by putting up flyer, putting an add in the newspaper and you can use the Internet as well. Put up flyers on bulletin boards in grocery stores, libraries, etc. You should talk to all the single parents that you know in your life and invite them to your group, and ask them to talk to other single parents they know.
You may have a good idea as to what you want to do, say and get accomplished in your support group but it’s important that you think about what it is you want to talk about before the meeting actually starts. You should have a table of snacks and desserts for your guests to enjoy and you should have coffee, soda, juice and water available as well. You want the members of your support group to feel comfortable, and be sure you give everyone a chance to speak at the meetings. You want everyone to be able to say what they feel but you can’t let one person take up the whole meeting.
