Craft projects that children can enjoy are among my all time favorites. I am often making quilts and blankets for family members but, it seems that the children love receiving them the most. I stumbled upon this craft project that is specifically for children. It is extra special because it is not only a blanket that will keep them toasty warm. It is also a very fun game that they can enjoy indoors on a rainy day .
To make this hopscotch blanket you will only need to have very moderate sewing skills. The pattern is a super flexible one that you can switch up to suit your own style. You won’t need many items to get started on this sewing craft project. You might even have enough material on hand to save yourself from having to purchase anything for this project. Here is everything that you will need to get started on your blanket and everything you will need to know to finish it.
Items Needed For Hopscotch Blanket
4. Solid color material for the backing of the blanket
5. Any color or patterned material for the cross color
6. Any color or patterned material for the numbers
Getting Started On The Blanket
The first thing you will want to do is find a large enough piece of material to use for the backing of your hopscotch blanket. This material can be cut into either a rectangle or a rectangle with shape to the top. You can make the top a half circle or a triangle if you want to have one number on a single space as the turn around.
After cutting your material for the backing you will want to cut your other material to make a pattern of equal sized boxes on the top of the blanket. This can be easily accomplished by cutting inch thick strips of material to sew on to the top of your backing. Sew them on in equally spaced strips and then turn the blanket to sew strips across them in equal spaces.
Adding The Hop
The amount of numbers that you add to your hopscotch blanket will vary depending on the pattern you would like to make for the hops. The important thing to remember when you are deciding on the hop pattern is that you would never want more than two numbers on any given line of the blanket. You should also cut your numbers out so that they are large enough to fill most of the space they will be sewn on top.
It is a great idea to space the numbers so that they include at least one or two single hops. The age of the child receiving the blanket should be the deciding factor on how to top off the blanket. If the child is very young, you will want to make sure to give the top a double hop so that they can turn around easier. If the blanket is for a more co-ordinated child, you can make the top of the blanket a single hop number.
Be sure to use bold colors for this blanket that will compliment each other when layered. You can use patterned material for the lines and numbers on the blanket, but you should be sure that the material is still brightly colored. Use simple single stitches when sewing the numbers on to the top of the blanket.
This blanket will provide many hours of warmth and fun for the lucky child that is going to receive it. It is one of the cutest craft projects for children that requires only simple sewing skills. I found all the material that I needed for my blanket by shopping at http://www.joann.com and with a few scrap pieces that I already had in my home. Have fun choosing materials that will give your blanket a unique style of your own.
The hopscotch blanket can be used for at least three purposes. It will keep you nice and warm. You can lay it out on the floor and actually play hopscotch on it. You can also make a few tiny toss pillows and use the blanket as a toss game that gives you the same amount of points as the number that it lands on. Children will absolutely love this blanket and their parents will love it for all of the entertainment it provides.
