I don’t know about you, but I enjoy making my own home décor items whenever possible. In my opinion, custom made home décor add to a home’s character more than mass produced, store bought items. For those that shy away from making their own home décor out of fear, let me set those fears to rest. Many home décor projects do not require you to be a Pablo Picasso. Nor do they take an absorbent amount of time or money. Take for example a decorative, metal heart wall hanging. It is a home décor project that is easy to do, looks like a million bucks when finished and requires little cash. Interested in giving it a try? Here is what you need to know to make one.
Metal Heart Wall Hanging Materials List
To complete this home decor project you will need to gather together the following materials;
1 roll steel wire, 19 gauge
1 pair tin snips
1 tape measure
1 drill bit, 1/8 inch
2 pieces sheet metal
1 grapevine wreath, 4 inches wide
1 thin tree branch
1 aluminum baking pan
1 cup white vinegar
½ cup table salt
1/ cup water
1 wooden paint stick
Step 1: Cutting the Metal Hearts
Begin by taking out your sheet metal, tin snips, pencil and ruler. Measure and draw several hearts onto the sheet metal. You may make as many or as little hearts as you wish. I recommend that you make at least three for symmetry purposes. Using your tin snips, cut the heart shapes out of the sheet metal and set them aside. It is now time to make the oxidizing solution.
Step 2: Preparing the Metal Oxidizing Solution
Due to the toxic fumes given off during the oxidizing process, this task is best performed outdoors or in a similar, well ventilated area. You will need your baking pan, the vinegar, salt and water for this step. Pour the vinegar, salt and water into the baking pan and stir with a wooden spoon or wooden paint stick. The metal oxidizing solution is now ready for use.
Step 3: Oxidizing the Metal Hearts
Submerge the metal hearts into the oxidizing solution and allow them to soak in it for 24 to 36 hours. At the end of the soaking period, remove the metal hearts from the solution and place them on the newsprint to dry. It is imperative that you do not rub the hearts dry as doing so could mar the metal’s new found patina.
Step 4: Preparing the Metal Hearts for Hanging
Proceed by taking out your electric drill and outfitting it with a 1/8 inch bit. Then, take out your oxidized hearts, a pencil and a tape measure. Measure and mark a drill hole in the top center of each heart. Using your pencil marks as guides, drill holes into the hearts. These holes are what will help connect the hearts to the wall hanging. Once you are done drilling the holes, set the hearts aside.
Step 5: Preparing the Wall Hanging
To complete this step you will need the steel wire, the tin snips and the tree branch. Start by winding one end of the wire around one end of the tree branch. Next, roll out enough wire to reach the other end of the tree branch with some room to spare. Once that is done, take your tin snips, cut the wire and wrap it around the naked end of the tree branch. When you are finished with this task each end of the tree branch should have a wire wrapped around it. This wire is going to serve as the hook.
Step 6: Hanging the Metal Hearts
Continue by taking out your metal hearts, tape measure and wire. Thread the metal wire through one heart and twist the wire back onto itself so that the heart is affixed to it. Before cutting the other end of wire and proceeding to the next heart, decide how high or low you want each heart to hang on the stick. Measure the wire accordingly and make your cuts. Once all the hearts have been outfitted with wire they may be attached to the stick. Attaching the hearts to the stick is easy. Simply wind each heart’s wire securely around the stick.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
At this point you should have a stick with a wire hook and several metal hearts suspended from it. Proceed by taking out your grape vine wreath and deconstructing it into a series of grape vines. Use those grape vines to adorn the stick. Wind as many or as little grape vines around the stick as you desire. Once you are happy with the results, the metal heart wall hanging is ready for use.
