Looking for a natural way to lighten your hair without all of the harsh, smelly chemicals usually associated with lightening your locks? Well, you’ve come to the right place!
Here is my tried and true recipe for an all natural, eco-friendly hair lightener that will also leave your tresses in great condition. Besides being lighter in tone, my hair is always soft and bouncy after using this hair lightening concoction.
So what is in this beauty secret? Something you probably already have in your pantry – honey.
According to the NB (Natural Beauty) Community, honey contains naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide. It is the action of this hydrogen peroxide that will lighten hair. Do you have permanent color, henna, or semi-permanent tinting in your hair? Honey, over time, will remove it, leaving you will lighter locks.
Bonus: because honey is gentle on your hair and skin, you will be able to use this hair treatment frequently without frying your tresses.
* 5 tablespoons of honey
* 1 cup water (you can substitute chamomile tea for the water to increase the lightening action)
* 1 teaspoon of grapeseed, apricot or olive oil
(Keep in mind, this recipe is a general guide. You can use more or less of these ingredients depending on hair length and thickness. Experiment a little, and see what works best for you.)
Putting it all together:
Step 1. Mix the honey in the water (or tea, if you are using it), and allow the mixture to sit for about half an hour. This will allow the honey’s hydrogen peroxide to develop.
Step 2. After the (approximately) 30 minutes is up, mix the oil into the water/honey mixture.Work the mixture evenly into hair.
Step 3. Leave the mixture on your hair for about an hour. Often, I’ll lay out in the sunlight and let the sun give me an extra boost of lightening. If I am indoors, I’ll place some type of plastic or shower cap over my hair to maximize the lightening activity.
Step 4. Rinse. Let the water run through your hair as your stand under the shower head. Massage the scalp, and move hair gently as the water runs through it. Finish with shampoo and conditioner.
Step 5: Enjoy your shiny, healthy, lightened locks!
