Summer brings about nice weather, good fun, vacations – and ants.
Ants can become a serious problem and a definite annoyance, and you might think that the only way to rid yourself of ants is to poison them; however, you might have small kids or pets that could accidentally get into the poison. If you don’t want to use poison to get rid of ants, there are other steps you can take.
Try the following suggestions to rid yourself of ants without using poison.
How to Get Rid of Ants Without Using Poison
There are a few crucial things you must do to rid yourself of ants. They include the following:
Do Not Leave Any Food Where Ants Can Get It
Make sure that all of your food is put away and stored properly. Don’t leave anything out to entice the ants into your kitchen. Put everything into the cupboards or refrigerator, and don’t leave crumbs around for the ants to get. Crumbs might not seem like anything to you and I, but to an ant, a crumb is a feast.
Clean Up Spills Before the Ants Find Them
If you spill anything, particularly soda or sweet tea or other sugary drinks, you are sure to attract ants. Make sure you keep your counters and floor free of sticky, sugary spills, or else you are just inviting the ants to come back.
Wipe Your Counters Thoroughly
Once you get all of the food put away and all the sugary substances wiped clean, it is time to focus on your counters. This is most likely where you are seeing your ants. Here, or on the floor.
Wipe your counters down several times daily with soap and hot water, or if you really want to deter ants, use bleach or a bleach solution. (See here.)
Some might argue that bleach is poison; I’m not suggesting you spray the ants with bleach. I’m suggesting you spray your counters with bleach. Any food will be destroyed, and the only reason ants are in your kitchen is to find food.
Make Sure the Ants Can’t Get In
Check your doors and windows and see if there are ants hanging around them. If they are, you know exactly where your ants are coming from, and you need to deter them away from this area by making sure it closes tight and properly. You can also use the previous idea and deter the ants from the area with a disinfectant.
Regularly Sweep Your Kitchen Floor
Your floor is covered is crumbs and other tidbits ants will find enticing. Keep your floor pristine, and the ants won’t find anything to eat.
Keep Up the Routine Or Else the Ants Will Come Right Back
Make sure you hold to this routine without fail. The more consistent you are, the sooner the ants will leave. Once they can’t find any food, they will start to give up, but any food is enough to give them hope again.
The Golden Rule of No Ants
It’s that simple. Don’t feed the ants, and they won’t bother you.
