The Netflix iPhone app is very useful. Personally, I very much enjoy watching television episodes on my iPod touch. However, the app does have a few flaws. It’s slow, and sometimes counter-intuitive. The worst problem by far seems to be the issue with the app’s ability to load episode lists. Still, flaws and all, I believe the app is worth our time, since there are some solutions for these issues.
These solutions are a bit on the sloppy side, but they work.
What is the “Load Episodes…” message?
Well, the app is attempting to do just that: load the episodes. However, since switching to a system in which the app searches for entire shows by the complete series rather than just one season at a time, the episode list for each television show with more than one season has grown drastically. I’ve noticed that generally speaking, the more episodes one show contains, the less likely the list is to load quickly, or even load at all. If you’re stuck with this message for a long time, your only option is to use the “play” button to start the series from episode one.
How Can I Skip to the Episode I Want?
There are a few ways to skip to the episode you’d like to see, but they’re both not very pretty. Here’s what you can do:
Keep in mind that your Netflix account keeps a sort of “recent history” on what you’ve been watching. You’ll need to use this feature to your advantage. “Trick” Netflix into “thinking” you’re the episode you’d like to see. How? You’ll need another device capable of using Netflix. For example, if you were to get onto your computer and begin the episode you’d like to see, then stop about a minute into the episode, then return to your iPhone and load the series you were watching, you’d see that the “play” button has changed into a “resume” button. This will let you continue watching the show from whatever episode you were watching on the other device. Alternatively, you can start the series from episode one…and simply fast forward through it. This will change the “play” button into a “play episode 2” button…you’ll need to repeat the process until your desired episode is reached.
Shoddy solutions? Indeed. Effective, though.
Is there another way?
Sadly, not for now. Generally, patience will be the key to loading your episode list, but sometimes the app simply will note cooperate. Until the app receives an update, we may be dealing with this problem for a while.
