Certified nurse-midwives provide routine gynecological care, family planning service, prenatal care and postnatal care to women and attend uncomplicated births. If complications arise, they typically refer women to obstetricians for care.
Attend a university and earn a bachelor’s degree in the science of nursing, or BSN. Numerous universities in Oregon offer BSNs, including Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Concordia University in Portland and Walla Walla University in Portland.

Enroll in a university that offers a graduate program in nurse-midwifery. The only university in Oregon currently offering such a degree, according to American College of Nurse-Midwives website in March 2011, is Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. You can attend a university in another state if you prefer and then return to Oregon practice nurse-midwifery. However, you’ll need to obtain an RN license in that state before you can enroll in a nurse-midwifery program at a university in that state. You can take the exam at numerous different testing sites in Oregon, including sites in Coos Bay, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Medford, Portland and Salem. Many nurse-midwifery students choose to work in a hospital labor and delivery unit as a registered nurse for a year or two prior to entering a graduate program in nurse-midwifery. The hands-on practical experience can help you as you move on to learn more advanced skills.
It is illegal to practice nursing in the state of Oregon without a license. In Oregon, you must also have a license to practice midwifery, as is the case in many other states, though not all.
